Under the general supervision of the Area Coordinator, the Community Director (CD) is responsible for building relationships and fostering a community that supports a diverse population of residence hall and/or apartment students to grow and develop individually and collectively, striving for personal and academic success. In addition, the CD is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs and activities for the university resident, meeting the goals of Student Housing & Residential Life (SHRL) and California State University, Monterey Bay. In addition to serving as a lead conduct officer for their residential community, the CD is a resource to the general campus community, and Student Affairs staff for issues of student and campus resident life. Since CSUMB is a residential campus, developing relationships and community to enhance student learning is central to the work of this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervision: Directly supervise, assess, and evaluate 6-16 Resident Advisors (RA) and 1-2 Student Assistants. Facilitate an environment of personal growth, leadership development, and academic success through formal training sessions, one-on-one meetings, scheduled staff meetings, and staff development opportunities. Communicate and clarify departmental and university goals and expectations in reference to the RA role. Support RAs individually and as a collective team to develop skills in relationship and community building, leadership, administration, and achieving personal balance. Dependent on area placement and direct supervision size, CD may share large staff supervision with a co-CD, as well as have an additional focus area including: Diversity and Inclusion Programming or Living Learning Program.

Individual and Group Student Development: Establish a positive atmosphere in the residential community that is conducive to student academic and developmental success. Promote the development of a multicultural community through assisting students in establishing a genuine respect for, and appreciation of personal differences. Create an environment through staff that encourages students to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, interpersonally, and ethically toward personal autonomy and interdependence. Resolve conflicts and encourage communication among staff and residents. Respond to questions and concerns raised by parents and family members of residents.

Counseling/Advising: Establish meaningful relationships with residents in the community, providing counseling when residents experience academic, personal, developmental, and/or community difficulties. Refer students to appropriate university and/or community resources. Intervene and assist in the resolution of interpersonal and inter group conflicts, which may disrupt the normal routine of a residential community and student learning. Provide informal individual and group counseling to resolve roommate or community conflicts. Assist in establishing appropriate agreements/compromises to address student concerns. Keep supervisor informed of all noteworthy incidents occurring in residence hall community, providing follow-up with students as necessary. Address behavioral problems and emergencies.

Leadership Development: Identify prospective student leaders and encourage them to become involved within the residential community, the Residence Hall Association (RHA), student clubs and organizations, CSUMB departments, and/or community agencies. Promote and encourage resident involvement in leadership development programs offered on campus and in the surrounding community. Provide leadership guidance and training for RAs, including a comprehensive staff development plan.

Program Development: Advise RAs in the development of active and passive activities designed to meet the needs of community residents and based on the department’s programming model; residential themes (Global Perspectives, Outdoor Adventures, Project Become More, Project Deep Roots, Project Higher Ground, Project Leading Change and Project Science, Math & Technology); and/or academically oriented living learning communities. Programs emphasizing partnership & innovation, sustainability, community, diversity & social justice, service, and vision & excellence are central to the Student Housing & Residential Life, CSUMB and Corporation Vision and Mission Statements. Integrate students’ residential and academic experiences through the development of quiet study areas, supportive workshops and activities, and the facilitation of faculty involvement in the community.

Administration: Perform a variety of administrative duties, including but not limited to, reports, room assignments, check-in/check-out procedures, hall transfers, occupancy statistics, assessing hall damage charges, attending and facilitating staff meetings, and sharing information with supervisors and colleagues. Assist the campus community and the residential life staff team in the coordination and implementation of new student orientation for students living in CSUMB residential communities. Periodically conduct focus groups and/or individual interviews to assist in determining departmental goals and objectives. Cultivate effective and mutually supportive working relationships with members of the campus community. Respond to daily requests for information and assistance from Student Housing & Residential Life staff, residents, and campus partners. Develop strategies in line with the Student Housing & Residential Life Mission Statements to enhance residents’ experiences while they live in the CSUMB residential community. Recommend and initiate solutions to problems or issues in systems procedures, ensuring residents’ needs are continually met in a supportive, caring manner.

Student Conduct: Identify individuals and groups with personal, social, academic, or disciplinary issues and assist them with such issues conscientiously and appropriately by providing counseling and/or referrals to an appropriate resource. Be knowledgeable of Federal, State, University, and Student Housing & Residential Life policies, regulations, procedures, and community standards applicable in a higher education residential life setting. Interpret and explain university philosophy, policies, expectations, regulations, and the developmental/educational goals of the conduct process to staff, residents, parents, and members of the campus community when necessary. Review all incident reports (IRs) and facilitate timely and appropriate resolution of conduct issues in cooperation with the Office of Judicial Affairs and Community Standards. Administer educational sanctions based on a developmental approach, encouraging residents to take responsibility for their actions in the community in which they live. Consult and coordinate as necessary with administrators, parents, and other university departments (i.e., Personal Growth and Counseling Center, Judicial Affairs and Community Standards, Student Activities, and University Police, among others) to maximize student learning and development, community safety, and retention. Confront University and Student Housing & Residential Life policy and community standard violations when observed, as well as assisting RAs with the resolution of difficult confrontation situations.

Facilities Management: Monitor physical condition of residence hall, suite, and apartment areas, working collaboratively with maintenance and custodial staff, paraprofessional staff, and residents to report and follow-up on work requests, damages, and facility emergencies.

On-Call Responsibilities: Serve on 24-hour duty (day, evening, holiday, and weekend) 365 days a year in rotation with other live-on professional staff responding to a variety of emergencies, carrying a department issued cell phone. On-call services include: crisis and emergency response, facility maintenance, direction and support for RAs, and conflict resolution for residents living in campus housing facilities.

Training and Staff Development: Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of Fall, Winter, and Spring training for RAs. Plan and facilitate various staff training workshops for both professional and para-professional staff.

Committee Responsibilities: Coordinate one or more facets of Student Housing & Residential Life, in addition to day-to-day responsibilities. Committees are designed to identify and meet students’ needs while addressing the goals and objectives of Student Housing & Residential Life. As students’ learning and developmental processes change over time, so too may the topics of these committees. Prior to each academic year, all Community Directors and the Associate Director will assess student and departmental needs in order to determine appropriate committee responsibilities, which may include, but are not limited to: paraprofessional staff selection, training, staff development, departmental wide programming initiatives, and/or advising the Area Councils.

Summer Responsibilities: Outside of the academic year, all Community Directors will assist in Departmental activities which may which may include, but are not limited to: training development, Orientation support, Summer programming, supervision of summer staff and/or support of Summer Conference program.

Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues; working knowledge of management techniques and personnel practices; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to departmental and university-wide goals; solid administrative and organizational skills (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint); effective interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others; the ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions in moderately complex situations; the ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of Student Housing & Residential Life, as well as the greater University Corporation, and CSUMB organizations.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a job-related field AND two years experience in planning, coordinating or directing college-level activities for student services program or in a related field (live-in staff experience preferred such as a Graduate Resident Director or full-time Resident Director). Master’s degree preferred.

Required/Specialized Skills
Must be available to work evening and weekends when necessary. Advanced fluency in using various standard office software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated technical literacy with electronic mail, mail merges, data entry, electronic scheduling, and internet communication software. Ability to work in an occasional high-pressured environment. Ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment and independently troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above. Ability to complete and pass training in Defensive Driving. Must continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Additional experience as live-in staff and Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or related field highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning; and demonstrated technical literacy.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position is $3,813.33 per month. Apartment and a meal plan included as additional compensation for night and weekend responsibilities. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. This is a 12-month, full time, exempt position.
