Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Health Education and Promotion is comprised of 39 faculty members whose research and teaching interests span a variety of areas that center on improving the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, populations, and the environment. The Department provides instruction for the University’s general education requirement in health. Over 1,200 majors are currently enrolled in one of the degree programs in the Department, including the BS in Public Health Studies with concentrations in Community Health, Worksite Health Promotion, and Prehealth Professions; MA and MAED in Health Education; BS and MS in Environmental Health; and BS and MS in Athletic Training. The BS in Public Health Studies is one of eight programs in the country that has been accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) as a stand-alone baccalaureate public health program. The MA and MAED in Health Education are offered online as distance education degrees. The Department is highly regarded in the University for its teaching and research excellence. Job Duties
The postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of environmental health, specifically related to water quality. Responsibilities include: leadership roles on research projects that aims to improve water quality by implementation of stormwater control measures (SCM) and septic system best management practices, and high frequency monitoring of SCMs and creeks. Duties include: literature review, overseeing collection of water, wastewater, and soil samples, laboratory analyses of samples, supervising undergraduate and graduate research students also working on the projects, assistance with review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of data using various statistical programs, and the development of collaborative presentations and publications. The postdoctoral scholar will be encouraged to seek external funding sources for proposal development. The scholar will also provide guest lectures for graduate and undergraduate Environmental Health classes. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 90% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to oversight of water quality research projects including field, lab, and data analyses components.

Approximately 10% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to assistance with teaching duties.

Minimum Education/Experience
English Proficiency

Excellent written and oral communication skills

A recent (1-2 years) PhD in an environmental health science or related (e.g., coastal resources management, engineering, geology) field is preferred. ABD will be considered. At least two first author publications (water quality-related) in peer-reviewed scientific journals is required.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
N/A

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Previous experience with groundwater, surface water, septic system, and stormwater control measure research is preferred. Experience teaching Environmental Health classes.
