Job Description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee who will be responsible for conducting basic and applied research in physical and process metallurgy, with a focus on microstructural evolution and characterization of precious metal alloys in multi-material assemblies. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Plan and direct fundamental and applied research, support engineering applications, write technical papers, reports and specifications, and present results at program meetings and professional conferences + Conduct short term problem solving and failure analysis, including travel, in support of customer needs

Required:
+ PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Welding, Metallurgical Engineering or a related field received within the last 5 years + Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). + Experience in physical metallurgy concepts as it relates to metal processing, microstructure, and property relationships + Strong communication skills as evidenced by a track record of both written professional publications and oral presentations + Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level security clearance

Department Description:

The Metallurgy and Materials Joining Department is the principal organization for metallurgical and joining research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories. Expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include welding and soldering, special brazing and diffusion bonding, and mechanical behavior. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. Staff supports a variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, creative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
