We are seeking an Intern Summer - R&D Undergrad On any given day, you may be called on to: + Utilize reflectance spectroscopy and/or image analysis to identify unique characteristics of several plants and/or aquatic species that have importance to American Indian Tribes, including tribal ecology, nutrition, health and wellness, and conservation + Prepare samples, collect data, perform data analysis, and document results under the supervision and mentorship of research staff and postdoctoral appointees + Prepare reports summarizing your research findings + Contribute to manuscripts for publication

Required:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program + Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 + Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer + U.S. citizenship Additional Requirements: + Currently majoring in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Forestry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field + Interest in conducting independent research to identify spectral signatures for remote sensing of the health and location of various plants of interest to the American Indian Tribal Ecology Candidates must submit one electronic file (include essay questions with the resume attachment) including answers to all of the following questions, using up to 250 words per question. 99. What unique academic involvement or life experience do you have with tribal communities or schools? Include student membership to the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) if applicable. (250 words) 99. What is your interest in biology and/or remote sensing, including any academic courses? (250 words) 99. How could you use this internship experience to benefit tribal communities? (250 words) 99. Describe a frustrating project you have worked on and describe how you dealt with the challenges it presented. Desired:
+ Experience with basic chemical and/or biological laboratory techniques + Experience with spectroscopy (of any variety). + Strong written and oral communication skills This position has a preference for an American Indian as defined as a member of a federally-recognized Tribe, Alaska Village or Alaska Corporation (not state-recognized, not bands or groups, or first peoples of Guam or Hawaii).

Department Description:

The Bioenergy and Defense Technologies department, which is part of Sandia's Biological and Engineering Sciences Center, supports mission areas in biodefense, emerging infectious disease, and biofuels. The department conducts fundamental and applied research in cell biology, immunology, nanomaterials and microbiology. The focus is on the development and use of advanced enabling technologies such as fluorescence microscopy, vibrational spectroscopies, X-ray and neutron scattering, and chemometric data analysis tools to study biological systems of interest to biofuels development and biodefense. Current research projects include developing nanoparticles for drug and vaccine delivery, understanding receptor activation and cell signaling processes, novel pathogen detection approaches, plant physiology, cellulase enzymes, as well as algal biochemistry and cultivation characterization for biofuels applications. We conduct research for the National Institutes of Health, Basic Energy Sciences, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, U.S. Industry, Department of Health and Human Services and Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research & Development program.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base.
