The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has an immediate opening for a Systems Administrator. The Systems Administrator is a key member of the Information Technology Services group and will report directly to the Executive Manager. ECE is an academic community of 1,400 individuals (faculty, staff and students) and includes global research and teaching efforts through extensions of our Pittsburgh academic programs and research in Silicon Valley, Portugal, Rwanda, Thailand and Singapore.

As a Systems Administrator, you will be a key member of the Information Technology Services group that supports the computing needs of customers across the College of Engineering. You will be responsible for covering a wide variety of technology use cases with a focus on customer support of administrative, research, and educational computing. Primary duties of this position include maintenance, deployment, and customer support of the platform ecosystems in IT Services for the ECE Department and its worldwide programs; base of operations will be the campus in Pittsburgh, PA. Expertise is required in deployment technologies for Microsoft Windows, macOS, RedHat Linux; software maintenance and distribution; basic administrative process automation; flexlm license management; security incident response; and web server technologies. The Systems Administrator will provide technical support at all levels to IT Services staff and affiliated customer groups; must be able to communicate in writing and orally to individuals and large groups with precision and clarity; must be able to write documentation and adjust to intended audiences with varying levels of understanding and background; must work in parallel with multiple projects, meet strict deadlines, and coordinate with all levels of IT Services staff; may be required to supervise student employees.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent field required
At least two years of current enterprise desktop administration in a heterogeneous environment
System security configuration experience in client and server OS
Technical experience in virtual system deployments
Proven use of automation tools and techniques; scripting in contemporary, common languages and related IDE's [PowerShell, Python, shell, JavaScript, PHP]
Experience with version control systems [Git, SVN]
Ability to troubleshoot complex and potentially undocumented issues with low-level tools such as Nmap, Wireshark, WinDbg, syslog, tcpdump, dmesg
Strong understanding of software packaging, configuration files, system variables, and editing tools
Strong fundamental understanding of Cisco switching and routing
Experience with modern project management methodologies
Preferred Skills:

Advanced understanding of computer operating systems (Windows, macOS), systems management software (SCCM, MDT), virtualization and computer networking; advanced understanding of operating system internals (Windows); experience with security analysis and certificate management; thorough knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, Windows registry; experience with FlexLM; experience with highly available network file systems (NFS/AFS/DFS); advanced ability to troubleshoot complicated computer or network problems; advanced experience with monitoring and metric systems; power user understanding of other desktop or server operating systems such as RHEL and Ubuntu; understanding of container technologies; understanding of common EE engineering applications; understanding of LDAP; understanding of regular expressions; understanding of database technologies.
