This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : **Are you passionate about your work and want to utilize state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions?** **Do you enjoy collaborating with dynamic, multidisciplinary research teams?** The Energy Innovation Department at Sandia/CA seeks to hire a postdoctoral appointee with experience in experimental materials science and plasma physics. You will support Sandia’s magnetic fusion energy program, which focuses on plasma-materials interactions, the design of plasma-facing components, and the development of edge plasma diagnostics. Depending on your prior background, you could also be collaborating with a team of researchers focusing on tritium science as well as Sandia’s hydrogen energy programs, including studies of metal hydrides for fuel cell electric vehicles, and hydrogen effects on structural materials. On any given day, you may be called upon to: + Study hydrogen transport and trapping in materials using thermal desorption spectroscopy and gas-driven permeation. + Characterize defect formation and structural changes of advanced tungsten alloys and other materials following exposure to high-flux hydrogen and helium plasmas. + Test novel hydrogen sensor diagnostics a laboratory setting and oversee deployment in large scale fusion devices. + Quantify the surface composition evolution of materials exposed to high-flux plasmas using scanning Auger microscopy and other surface-sensitive diagnostics. + Lead independent projects and collaborate with colleagues at General Atomics (DIII-D), U.C. San Diego, University of Tennessee, U.C. Berkeley, as well as at the national laboratories + Mentor undergraduate summer interns and graduate students + Present at conferences and communicate results in peer-reviewed literature

Required:
You have the following: + Ph.D. in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, solid-state physics, physical chemistry, or related field. + Research background in experimental materials science, surface science, or plasma physics.

Desired:
You also have one, or more, of the following: + Ability to develop independent research projects, as proven by a record of publication in peer-reviewed literature. + Proficient communication skills, demonstrated through presentations at technical conferences, publications, and/or teaching lectures. + Hands-on experience in ultra-high vacuum systems, plasma diagnostics, and/or low and medium energy ion beam techniques. + Research background in hydrogen surface interactions and/or hydrogen effects on materials. + Experience with theory and modeling of surface chemical reactions. + Familiarity with LabView, Mathematica, Python, C, Fortran as well as the Linux operating environment. + Ability to obtain a security clearance.

Department Description:

The Energy Innovation Department (08356) is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers working on fundamental scientific research and technology development that support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Our diverse portfolio of work includes the development of hydrogen as a practical clean fuel source, novel approaches to thermal management, and plasma-materials interactions for magnetic fusion energy. Projects range from the surface science of hydrogen storage materials to more applied engineering of hydrogen energy infrastructure. The department also leads complementary hydrogen-in-materials research supported by DOE’s Office of Fusion Energy Sciences. This work spans the breadth of basic plasma studies to major efforts in the plasma-material interactions and fusion nuclear science. Members of our team also invented the Sandia Cooler (recipient of R&D 100 award) and have demonstrated its utility for high-power solid-state lighting and other applications, as well as TwistactTM which can improve electrical power handling in large wind turbines. More broadly, the Energy Innovation Department is part of the Chemistry, Materials, and Combustion Center at Sandia/California. This center is home to much of the materials science research at the laboratory, and includes a variety of world-class surface science and microscopy capabilities.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
