Job Description

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking two dynamic and creative Postdoctoral Appointees to support one or more large DOE funded projects in Gen3 CSP and beyond. If you are passionate about working in a multi-disciplinary renewable energy team that could ultimately span activities we do for other mission areas at the Labs, this might be the job for you. You will work in the Concentrating Solar Technologies Department which performs R&D in Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies for the generation of electricity and fuels at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF). The NSTTF is the only large-scale research and testing facility in the United States for CSP technologies. Work is focused on enabling today’s CSP industry and performing R&D that will change the nation’s energy future. The department conducts its research and testing in partnership with the US Department of Energy, other national laboratories, industry, and academia. The department has access to Sandia’s broader R&D capabilities and expertise, while simultaneously offering testing capabilities and services to other laboratory missions. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Support the R&D, procurement and construction of a supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) loop for CSP. You will be expected to take ownership of one or more sub-systems within this loop supporting senior staff; + Perform and support R&D relating to any aspect of CSP based on how well suited you are to include: Optics, Heat Transfer, Thermal fluids and materials, Power cycles and more; + Develop proposals for DOE funding and perform other activities relating to PR and establishing new R&D business opportunities; + Assist the department in conducting large-scale tests at the NSTTF; + Work with Sandia’s technology transfer and licensing experts to move successful R&D from the Labs to industry; + Disseminate R&D outcomes and the departments capabilities in various forms including journal article publications and by presenting papers at national and international conferences; + You may represent Sandia and the department in national or international committees relating to conferences, standards and publications.

+ PhD in a STEM related discipline; + Evidence of coursework and research in the field of energy, which could include heat transfer and/or thermodynamics and/or fluid mechanics; + Evidence of research expertise in the form of technical publications. + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

+ Real passion for growing the energy security of the nation and world through solar technologies; + PhD in engineering with subject areas such as (but not limited to) thermodynamics, heat transfer, optics, computational methods, autonomy and control systems; + Proficiency with Solidworks including working with large assemblies and the ability to craft and modify technical drawings; + Experience with the design and construction of high pressure piping systems including hardware such as Swagelok fittings and Grayloc connections; + Proficiency with Python, Matlab, or another scripting languages; + Theoretical and experimental R&D experience in CSP systems and technologies; + Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance. Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
