Job Description


The College of New Jersey invites applications for a one year, half time temporary Assistant Professor in Graphic & Interactive Design in the Department of Art and Art History. Date of appointment: August 26, 2019.

With a 13 to 1 student to faculty ratio, TCNJ seeks to enroll approximately 1,375 entering, full-time freshmen each fall, 95 percent of whom live on campus.

The program of Graphic Design is housed in the Department of Art & Art History. The department is committed to providing programs of study which develop a high level of conceptual and technical ability, resources beyond the studio for a broader education in the arts, exposure to and understanding of digital media and methods of communication, and a balance between a demanding course of professional study and a liberal arts education


We are seeking an inspiring, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic designer to teach in TCNJ's Graphic Design program. The annual teaching load for this position is 2 to 3 courses with administrative duties. The individual appointed to this position will teach primarily in the areas of Design Fundamentals, Typography and other design courses as needed. Candidate should be willing and able to teach most graphic design courses as needed.


A terminal degree (MFA, MS, PhD) in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, or Visual Communication Design from an accredited institution is preferred, but those who hold a BFA from an accredited institution with substantial professional practice and previous teaching experience will be considered.

At least 1 year of college teaching experience. Digital Design and Web is an asset.

Abilities to assist students to conduct theoretical and professional design research, and provide a robust understanding of design fundamentals including typography, and design thinking methods.

Expertise in graphic software applications which include Mac OS, Adobe Creative Suite.

Solid foundation in design as it relates to contemporary visual communication and critical theory with the ability to teach print production, craftsmanship and digital design as needed.

Strong understanding of curriculum and excellent communication skills.
