The Botas lab is seeking summer students to be a part of a team performing large-scale genetic screens in Drosophila models of neurodegenerative disorders (such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease). The goal of these screens is to identify risk factors contributing to disease susceptibility as well as potential therapeutic targets. Students will work with stereomicroscopes to sort Drosophila of different genotypes according to genetic markers and will set up thousands of mating schemes. For each mating, they will then sort and collect progeny of the appropriate genotypes to assess neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration using well-established behavioral readouts.
