Position Description

The Composition Program seeks an adjunct faculty member to teach:

English 004, Composition in Spring 2020

MWF 8:00-9:05 am

In addition to teaching, instructors in the Composition Program are expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of three hours a week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom. Instructors are also expected to participate in faculty development including workshops, class observations, and syllabus collaboration. Course design must follow the program's common syllabus, meeting the requirements described.

Course Description

English 4 helps students develop their skills in critical thinking and written communication, and it introduces them to information evaluation and research practices. Through the writing process, students engage in intellectual discovery and unravel complexities of thought. They read and write to examine their own and others' assumptions, investigate topics, and analyze arguments. With a focus on writing as a scaffolded process, the course is designed to prepare students for writing in Collegiate Seminar, the more advanced writing required in English 5, and college-level writing in general.

Qualifications:

Minimum:



At least two years of experience teaching first-year writing (English 4 or 5) as the instructor of record at SMC or equivalent courses at an accredited institution. Outside applicants (non-BUFM) must also submit evaluations, evidence of course development, and evidence of teaching excellence. Experience must be within the last five years.



Outside applicants (non-BUFM) must also provide evidence of successful completion of graduate coursework in Composition pedagogy.



MA in Rhetoric and Composition, PhD in English, MFA in Creative Writing, or a similarly-defined field
