Job Description

Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor (or Associate Professor with appropriate qualifications) in the Department of Education to begin September 1, 2020. Depending on preparation and interest, the successful candidate may also be appointed as department chair an additional endowed term appointment as the Grace and Bertil Pehrson Professor of Education, which includes an annual stipend and professional development funds.

Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and department. Primary responsibilities of this position will include teaching literacy courses (i.e., Literacy for the K-12 Teacher and Reading in the Content Areas), and contributions to general education courses (e.g., First Term Seminar, a liberal arts capstone, January Term).

Prerequisites
Minimum Qualifications:

Doctorate in Literacy (or a related) field; we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by September 1, 2020;
Advanced preparation related to literacy sufficient to be deemed a content expert;
A minimum of one year of prior experience working as an elementary, middle, secondary, or K-12 teacher;
Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student advising; and
Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.
Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated effectiveness in K-12 and/or undergraduate teaching;
Demonstrated emerging pattern of scholarship in literacy, education, or a related field;
Demonstrated understanding of the importance of a liberal arts education and a vision for contributing to that education;
Advanced preparation, experience, and interest to serve as department chair for the Education Department (e.g., knowledge of accreditation review).
