Job Purpose

Official Title: Development Director

The Director of Development provides top-level communication materials and effective strategy in all media channels to achieve and maximize prospects and major gifts. This position supports the Office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs in all fundraising efforts, partnering with major gift officers and team members affiliated with the annual fund, alumni affairs, events, corporations, foundations and others who require effective messaging to optimize and streamline success.

Job Responsibilties
  • As a senior writer, this person will be able to:
    • Create effective donor-driven proposals that articulate a strong case for support and that are aligned with Baylor College of Medicine’s mission and priorities.
    • Other writing responsibilities will include but are not limited to talking points for events, articles for Baylor's publications, materials for mass-mailing and emails, letters of inquiry, departmental/project overviews, case statements and various donor letters, including letters from the president. All writing will have a bearing on fundraising goals.
    • Attend some meetings with faculty members and donors to get ideas first-hand.
    • Aid other team members with brainstorming for their special projects.
    • Careful proofing and editing of big projects for others.
    • Proactively create proposals for Baylor priorities.
    • Help personalize letters in the correct voice for strong relationship building.
  • Be able to write and design proposals to match the Baylor brand and address our major gift donors in the most attractive and compelling product possible.
  • Be able to meet deadlines and also have the flexibility to adapt if needs and deadlines change.
  • As an experienced writer, this person will:
    • Work with other team members, including the prospect research team, managers and field officers to craft written materials.
    • Read pertinent healthcare current events and any donor news items, sharing with the department when appropriate.
    • Stay current with Baylor College of Medicine funding opportunities, priorities and program growth to make appropriate recommendations for proposals.
  • As an experienced team member, act as project lead for certain initiatives on an ad hoc basis.
  • Help guide interviewing and hiring process.
  • Assist in orientation of new employees for the rest of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Required: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience: Required: Three years of relevant experience. 
Preferred Qualifications

Education: Preferred: Master's degree in a related field

Skills:

  • Familiarity with some content management systems, web platforms, Facebook, Twitter and other social media
  • Ability to communicate with technical staff, non-technical staff and a demonstrated understanding of data analysis.
  • Office and design skills including PowerPoint, Excel and InDesign, Photoshop considered an asset
