Job Description

The University of Texas at Austin, School of Design and Creative Technologies in the College of Fine Arts seeks a Chair for the fast-growing Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies, effective Spring of 2020.

This dynamic department has exploded in growth grown quickly since its inception four years ago. Its degree program currently has emphases in Music & Sound, Digital Visualization, Performance Lighting and Interactivity and, the largest, Game Design.

Chair responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Providing vision and leadership for the department as it continues to grow and develop
Interacting with and developing new programs and opportunities in cooperation with other departments such as Computer Science
Overseeing faculty and staff hiring
Long term strategic planning
Assisting with fundraising
Managing department budgets
Overseeing scholarship awards and other student opportunities including internships and job placement.
The Chair reports to the Assistant Dean of the School of Design and Creative Technologies and will work closely with the Assistant Dean and the Chair of the Department of Design to develop curricular, instructional and operational structure for the fast-growing School of Design and Creative Technologies. They will also contribute to the leadership of the College of Fine Arts by serving on the Chairs and Directors council to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. Additional responsibilities will include student mentoring, college and university service, teaching, and original scholarship or professional activity.

This is a twelve-month faculty administrator appointment and requires relocation to Austin, TX. Rank and tenure status are open and contingent on experience. Some teaching is expected. Earliest possible start date is January 2020.

The Chair should have a minimum of ten years of either academic and or industry experience. They should demonstrate a knowledge of the global creative and entertainment industries, especially in computational applications, technology, creativity and marketing. They should be familiar with current research, scholarship, and pedagogy in arts and entertainment technologies at national or international levels. They must have strong communication skills (verbal, written, and listening), and also have exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to interface and engage with a diverse group of stakeholders.

A history of experience working within a creative and entertainment technology industry sector such as television, film music, theatre, theme park or video games preferred. Teaching experience in higher education strongly desired. Proven operational and management skills and a proven record of success in fundraising and development are preferred.
