Job Description

The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Fellow is to provide support for our pathology related studies that are conducted at the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics. To provide support for patient tissue DNA extraction for molecular profiling as an integral part of our clinical studies. Our laboratory is focused on new predictive and prognostic biomarkers.

KEY FUNCTIONS
1. To perform extraction and analysis of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from patient plasma samples, or extract DNA from archival formalin fixed and paraffin embedded (FFPE) tumor biopsy tissues:
 Use approved kits to carefully extract DNA and verify quantity and quality
 Use droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) to test mutant allele frequencies of select mutations in patient tissues
 Identify and validate new probes for mutation detection
 Perform DNA methylation sequencing in patient tissues
 Trouble-shoot/optimize cfDNA technology
 Prepare weekly reports and publication quality datasets summarizing results
 Facilitate joint research projects between Dr. Janku’s group and industry collaborators
 Carefully document all experiments and techniques and train laboratory personnel as needed
 Attend weekly lab meetings and present new data

2. To learn and assist special tissue molecular techniques:
 Enter the results timely and accurately in a database and maintain this database
 Assist with data interpretation and basic data analysis such as e.g. correlations, survival curves, etc.
 Preparing scientific reports, manuscripts, SOPs, etc.
 Learn other molecular techniques as needed.

3. To maintain a high level of professional expertise and credibility through educational programs,
including on-site training / off-site conferences:
 Attend department research meetings and conferences.
 Attend approved off-site meetings and conferences.
 Supplement education as needed through use of reference materials, lectures, etc.
 Be punctual in arriving at all professional functions.
 Inform appropriate staff and arrange coverage for experiments if needed

5. To assist with development of and maintaining databases:
 Generate documents on computer, using word processing, spreadsheet, and other software to produce
 Communicate with appropriate individual(s) regarding upcoming deadlines, meetings, etc.

6. Other duties and assignments:
 To assist with other duties that may occur (e.g. learn new techniques, etc.)
 Understand and adhere to the policies and procedures related to conduct of clinical trials and human tissue as delineated in the department training manual and the institution policies and guidelines


The performance for all expected outcomes is measured by observation by supervisor, faculty and co-workers, the accuracy and timeliness of work produced, and the demonstrated ability to effectively work under stress. The position also requires one to anticipate needs, to recognize situations requiring assistance and have the ability to refer or perform any necessary tasks, and to comprehend the goals of the department/program.

The above functions require the following abilities and skills:
 Ability to practice independently, strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational and critical judgment skills, and ability to interact effectively with co-workers.

 Strong organizational skills.
 Ability to work with personal computers using standard word processing software, spreadsheets, and programs for database and graphics usage.
 English language, including spelling, writing, and verbalizing and ability to communicate well verbally and in writing.
