Summary

The Texas Children's Research Tissue and Support Services (RTSS) Core Facility is seeking a motivated individual to serve as a Staff Scientist. The RTSS provides a range of technical services to support basic and translational research across the Hospital, including high-quality tissue biorepositories for the Cancer and Heart Centers.

 

Job Purpose

This Staff Scientist is responsible for maintaining data quality, completing specimen inventory queries for requesting researchers, and facilitating data collection of relevant clinical data associated with the biospecimens. The Staff Scientist will also coordinate with the Director, Manager, and Laboratory Supervisor to provide consistent delivery of high quality, cost-effective services to requesting researchers, including helping understand researchers' needs for specific projects. The Staff Scientist will provide technical input on development of new methods in the laboratory and may also perform laboratory tasks, as needed. The Staff Scientist will work closely with the Director, Manager, and Laboratory Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Core. The Staff Scientist may also conduct analyses of data to ensure clinical data quality or to provide an overview of statistics relevant to specimen inventory or laboratory quality control.

Job Responsibilities
  • Processes, documents and enters information into the Core database
  • Executes queries on data relevant for research projects
  • Assists in the collection of patient data
  • Coordinates collaborative interactions with researchers
  • Performs and documents scheduled quality control procedures
  • Performs and documents scheduled instrument maintenance and calibration to ensure proper functioning according to manufacturer guidelines
  • Develops and updates methods for conduct of laboratory experiments
  • Provides statistical analyses as needed for laboratory quality control/assurance
Minimum Qualifications
Education:

Required: PhD in biological science or epidemiology with basic science experience. Experience may not be substituted in lieu of degree.

Experience:

Required: Three years of post doctoral research experience.

Other
  • Experience in biobanking preferred.
  • Excellent organization, communication skills, and the ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Requires experience with computer spreadsheets, databases, and data analysis programs
  • Must be self-initiating and have ability to think proactively
  • Prior experience in mammalian tissue culture and molecular biology techniques is strongly desired
  • Carefulness and attention-to-detail are critical
  • May handle biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, such as those found in an ordinary laboratory or clinic environment
