This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? You could be the Postdoctoral Appointee we are seeking to focus on the development of Discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the extended magnetohydrodynamics and relativistic multi-fluid plasma equations. You will have the opportunity to join a diverse, world- class team, from the High Energy Density Physics Theory, Electromagnetic Theory and Computational Mathematics Departments. Scientific applications include magnetic confinement fusion and magnetic implosion dynamics with relevance to z-pinch devices, along with power flow in magnetically insulated transmission lines. This position requires infrequent (1-2 times per year) travel. Required:
+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in physics, engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a related area + Experience with discontinuous galerkin methods for PDEs + Experience with software development in C++ + Evidence of strong research achievements in relevant technical areas as demonstrated in the form of technical publications, presentations, software tools, and/or knowledge of applications

Desired:
+ Experience with computational formulations and solution methods for two or more of the following: relativistic kinetics, relativistic fluids, electromagnetics, compressible fluid flow, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) or multi-fluid plasma physicsDemonstrated strong background and expertise in numerical methods for partial differential equations with particular emphasis on hyperbolic problems and relativistic systems + Experience with computational models for magnetic confinement fusion applications or magnetic implosion dynamics with relevance to z-pinch devices + Experience in a collaborative research environment on problems comprising diverse application domains + Some experience with hybrid continuum / kinetic algorithms and/or modeling for plasma physics systems

Department Description:

Research within the High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) Theory Department 1641 spans a broad range of topics with a common theme of gaining an improved understanding of materials at normal as well as extreme conditions of high densities and/or temperatures, pressures, magnetic fields, and rapidly changing states. Major efforts of the department include developing simulations codes and high-fidelity material models together with designing dynamic material and plasma physics experiments for Sandia's Z Machine. Our research has both applied and fundamental dimensions – for example in the areas of electronic structure, shock physics, material science, planetary science and astrophysics. More specifically, work at the department involves fundamental research in materials- and plasma physics: i) developing and applying methods based on quantum mechanics, primarily Density Functional Theory and quantum Monte Carlo, for developing both an improved understanding and quantitative models for materials properties; ii) developing magneto-hydrodynamics simulation codes and applying them to study plasma physics designing Z experiments; and iii) using and employing hybrid plasma simulation codes to study Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) effects and laser-matter interactions. Current research areas include Dynamic Material properties/NNSA Science Campaigns, Quantum Monte Carlo within Basic Energy Sciences/DOE Office of Science, Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC), and the program for fundamental science experiments on the Z machine. The department has active collaborations with research groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory as well as with academic institutions in the US and in Europe, for example the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Harvard University, the University of Rostock in Germany, Princeton University, Cornell University, Carnegie Institution of Washington, and North Carolina State University.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia and will require uncleared access during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
