Job Description

The Art Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites candidates working in the field of Environmental Art to apply for a tenure track faculty position recruited at the level of assistant professor.

We seek an accomplished artist with environmental art as a central practice and whose work shows potential to attain national and international recognition. We have a preference for candidates with a multidisciplinary orientation. Successful candidates must be able to teach in both graduate and undergraduate art classes. We seek a candidate with the ability to teach technical and conceptual art at a graduate and undergraduate level including students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. In addition, the ideal candidate engages environmental art as a contribution to the health of the earth from the local to global scales. We are also interested in a candidate who demonstrates a broad understanding of environmental and ecological systems, practices and the scholarly fields of environmental art and related critical histories. Possible related areas of research and teaching might include intro to environmental art, bio arts, environmental design, systems thinking, environmental justice or ecological thinking/practice.

Candidates will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The campus currently operates on a schedule of three 11­week quarters per academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach 4.5 graduate/undergraduate five ­unit courses per year, or their equivalent, in accordance with the department's workload policy? advise and mentor students? actively engage in research activity? and actively participate in administrative responsibilities for the department, affiliated college and the campus. The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable.

The Art Department engages environmental art by exploring the potential impact of interdisciplinary art practices on society and the environment. The BA program in Art is an interdisciplinary program. Art majors are encouraged to study a variety of courses within the art department as well as in other departments. Faculty in this position will be teaching students with visual arts backgrounds as well as well as students who study ecology, environmental studies and other fields related to environmental art. Candidates will also teach in our upcoming MFA program in environmental art and social practice. This MFA is expected to accept the first student cohort in 2021.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have Masters, M.F.A. or Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in an area of expertise related to Environmental/Ecological Art. Degree requirements expected to be completed by June 30, 2020.

POSITION AVAILABLE
July 1, 2020, with the academic year beginning in September 2020. Degree requirements must be met by June 30, 2020 for employment effective July 1, 2020.
