Assistant Professor of Piano – Tenure Track
School of Performing Arts
South Dakota State University

The South Dakota State University School of Performing Arts invites applications for Assistant Professor of Piano. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join the school beginning August, 2020. This is a nine-month, tenure-track, full-time, benefits-eligilble position. The position is supervised by the Director of the School of Performing Arts.

SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations. Women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach applied piano;
• Coach chamber music and collaborate with other performance faculty in the department;
• Establish positive working relationships with area teachers and demonstrate success in recruiting music majors to the studio;
• Enhance the curricular needs of the School by teaching in one additional area of strength (theory, entrepreneurship, conducting (musical theatre), or jazz improvisation);
• Engage in professional activity/scholarly research. Performing, participating and presenting for appropriate professional organizations, and writing in the discipline are some examples of the types of scholarly and service-related activities expected in the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Completed terminal degree (DMA, DA) in discipline by first day of employment;
• Demonstrated passion for teaching indicated by previous experience;
• Demonstrated skills as a soloist and a collaborative artist;
• Ability to teach in at least one additional area of strength within the discipline of music (theory, entrepreneurship, conducting (musical theatre), or jazz improvisation);
• Work collaboratively and with a commitment to diversity;
• Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills;
• Sponsorship is not available for this position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Prior experience in teaching at the university level.

SALARY:
Commensurate with qualifications.
