Job Overview:
Demonstrated ability in science administration, communication with member companies, the scientific community, and media, and ability to explain alcohol research to lay audience.
Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as extensive publications and knowledge of the biological and molecular sciences.

Position Description:
This position will be responsible for all matters regarding science and health. The position will have additional and related responsibilities for relationships with federal and state agencies, as well as third party organizations, pertaining to regulatory and policy matters regarding scientific aspects of beverage alcohol.
This position will develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge base regarding science as it relates to beverage alcohol. The individual will provide DISCUS Offices and DISCUS member companies with scientific interpretation and analysis in order to enhance and contribute to the operations and activities of DISCUS and its Offices.
The individual in this position shall supervise the position of Manager, Science Department.

Specific responsibilities will include:
• Establish DISCUS within health communities, government agencies and third-party organizations as a responsible leader in the beverage alcohol industry.
• Act as a key resource for the association and its members by providing information and analysis on all scientific issues related to beverage alcohol.
• Provide access to all scientific aspects concerning beverage alcohol for members, DISCUS Offices, health communities, policymakers, third-party organizations, and government agencies.
• Ensure scientifically accurate representation of beverage alcohol generally, and distilled spirits in particular, in presentations and publications related to alcohol and health.
• Increase awareness and understanding within the health, policymaker and media communities regarding the potential health effects of beverage alcohol and moderate distilled spirits consumption in a healthy adult diet.
• Respond to scientific misinformation, discrimination of distilled spirits products, proposed government regulations and public policy based on misinterpreted science. This will include instances where beverage alcohol is characterized in a manner not supported by the available scientific literature, as well as instances where distilled spirits are inappropriately characterized as different or more “harmful” than other types of beverage alcohol.
• Be the primary point of contact for DISCUS with government regulatory agencies and third-party organizations regarding scientific matters. Actively improve information flow and relationships with these agencies and organizations for DISCUS and its members.
• Establish close professional relationships of Distilled Spirits Council with national and international governmental agencies (NIH, CDC, FDA, SAMHSA, HHS, USDA, WHO, OECD, PAHO), health communities, and third-party organizations as a responsible leader in the Distilled Spirits industry.
• Provide scientific leadership for internal DISCUS working groups to address alcohol policy discussions by government agencies and third-party organizations.

Position Accountabilities:
• Supervising the maintenance of scientific data bases at DISCUS
• Prompt response to member companies requests and media inquiries, as well as providing needed information to other Divisions at DISCUS
• Manage science office budget
• Participate in scientific meetings to maintain credibility of office of science
• Publish articles about alcohol health effects
• Handle inquiries from media, public, or government agencies in a swift and accurate manner
• Maintains quality relationships with all corporate partners/sponsors and government agencies, liaisons, and other entities such as IARD,, WSA etc
• Provides and supports effective member relations.
• Acts in a manner conducive to a positive and healthy work environment.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by the Board, President and CEO.

• Must possess doctorate degree in biological sciences (or equivalent) and have minimum 5-7 years related work experience in academia, with extensive publications on alcohol and health
• The ideal candidate should be a quick learner and thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
• Excellent communication skills
• Must be extremely organized, detail-oriented
• The ability to work both independently, as well as with a team
