Job Description

The Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applicants for a Post Doctoral Research Associate in STEM Education. Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years, and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

The incumbent will primarily work on a NSF-funded research project (NSF ITEST #1850296), which is designed to improve 1) elementary teachers’ instruction and students’ engagement and understanding in the STEM domains of engineering, digital technology, and systems thinking and 2) elementary student science learning among traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM through professional development. Duties will include collecting, managing, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data (e.g., videotapes of classrooms, PD and lesson planning artifacts, interviews, and teacher and student surveys) and disseminating findings through manuscript preparation and at scholarly conferences. The candidate(s) will also have the opportunity to work on other funded and non-funded projects.
Qualifications:

A Ph.D. degree in science education, engineering education, or STEM education with a research focus on K-12 instructional practices is required by the appointment start date.
Effective oral and written communication skills are required.
A record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed science/STEM/engineering education journals will be highly valued.
Desirable qualifications include knowledge and application of best practices in K-12 STEM teaching, learning, and assessment, as well as experience with faculty development.
The successful candidate(s) will have a substantial background in quantitative and/or qualitative research design and methods, be able to work independently, and multi-task.
The successful candidate will be expected to help mentor undergraduates students.
