Job Description

The School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a Assistant Professor (Practice) (.50 FTE) and Instructor (.50 FTE) positions. One appointee will be hired to fill both positions which will result in a combined full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, fixed-term appointment. Reappointment is at the discretion of the School Head.

The primary purpose of this position is to enhance professional preparation of students in the School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) through exposure to practical industry experience and project management skills and practices in classroom and laboratory settings. Major duties include developing and creating relationships with chemical engineering, bioengineering, and environmental engineering-related companies and industry partners, drawing upon industry partnerships to support advancement of career preparation, industry awareness, and real life situations to the course learning outcomes. The successful candidate will promote critical thinking, advance student’s knowledge and skills, serve as an industry liaison, and create opportunities for students to engage in industrially relevant projects. This person will develop and deliver educational and laboratory experiences with an emphasis on industrial practices that impart essential skills and practical knowledge, enrich and reinforce the ideas, concepts, and skills delivered in the CBEE curriculum. Education initiatives should support a lifetime of professional growth and accomplishment, in part by bringing together students and practitioners in ways that promote mutually beneficial engagement and learning. They will also contribute to a community of students, faculty, and staff that embrace diversity and inclusive practices to foster collaboration and equalize student success, regardless of social identity or background.

In addition, this position will provide leadership and direction for meaningful project experiences that reinforce successful professional practices at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Through these project experiences, the candidate will demonstrate and reinforce the skills of professional practice in the following areas: design and conduct of experiments; practical problem solving and trouble-shooting; engineering design practices; process safety; leadership, professional ethics, and inclusive practices; cultivation of positive team interactions; effective written and oral communication; modern project planning and management practices and software; and project modification and evaluation. This position works closely with the CBEE Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) and the CBEE Corporate Relations Coordinator, and cultivates partnerships with industry and/or government laboratories, to secure and develop sponsored projects and student internships.

The School of CBEE provides formal undergraduate and graduate education, and conducts sponsored and unsponsored research for the benefit of the State of Oregon, private industry, the Federal government, and other entities. Candidates should have a demonstrable commitment to both missions, as well contributing to the instruction, vision and goals of the School, College and University.

The incumbent will hold two appointments, each at 50% time, reflecting job duties in both the administrative outreach and academic arenas.
