Job Description

Position Summary
The Network Engineer is responsible for the overall design and physical construction of La Salle University networks. Responsibilities include all computer communication and telecommunication services including the configuration, placement and troubleshooting of all physical equipment such as routers, communication switches, cables and wires used to connect equipment in addition to all wireless and radio frequency systems. The Network Engineer works closely with the Technology Infrastructure area, and collaborates on a daily basis with other IT members, departments, and vendors.

Essential Duties
• Designs and maintains the University’s physical infrastructure for data and voice networks by working with vendors, contractors and/or employees for running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cables; installing telecommunications equipment, routers, switches, multiplexors, cable trays, and alarm and fire-suppression systems; building ironwork and ladder racks; establishing connections; programming features; establishing connections and integrations; following industry standards; activating remote access tools; coordinating with contractors.
• Plans network installations according to budget parameters by studying customer orders, plans, manuals, and technical specifications; orders and gathers equipment, supplies, materials, and tools, assessing installation site; prepares an installation diagram.
• Makes recommendations, verifies service by testing circuits, equipment, and alarms; identifying, correcting, or escalating problems. Documents network by labeling and routing equipment and cables; recording configuration diagrams and specifications. Operates master consoles to monitor the performance of networks and computer systems determines if adjustments need to be made to provide reliable and highly available networks.
• Maintains wired and wireless network by troubleshooting and repairing outages; testing network back-up procedures; updating documentation. Maintains safe work environment by following codes, standards, and legal regulations. Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
• Performs disaster recovery operations and data backups.
• Protects data, software and hardware by coordinating, planning and implementing network security measures.
• Designs, redesigns and updates network architecture.
• Monitors network performance 24/7/365 to determine if adjustments need to be made or issues affecting performance. Sustains the necessary data throughput rate by monitoring networking activity and maintaining existing equipment.
• Confers with network users about solving existing system problems.
• Operates master consoles to monitor the performance of networks and computer systems.
• Maintains the network switch configuration and wiring infrastructure for the University’s Voice over IP system. Works with the Systems Administration team for configuration issues.
• Builds and maintains the University’s hardware infrastructure for wireless network.
• Updates the network maintenance documentation and submit modifications, new installations and other changes to documentation.
• Collaborates with third-party support and service vendors to ensure that the network stays operational.
• Estimates project costs, determines and follows timelines, and tracking budget expenses

Secondary Responsibilities
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves hardware, software, and other network and system problems.
• Replaces faulty network hardware components.
• Maintains the University legacy copper telephone system and works closely with the phone service provider to keep the lines active and reliable.
• Maintains hardware inventory
• Configures and tests wired and wireless networking hardware, computer hardware, and operating system software.
• All other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Chief Information Officer.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field plus 5 years experience within the field or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
• Proven track record successfully managing projects, solving problems, and planning strategically.
• 5+ years’ experience directly managing computer networks.
• 3+ years’ experience directly working with network architecture and deployment.
• Experience implementing, administering, and troubleshooting network infrastructure devices such as wireless access points, firewall, routers, switches, controllers.
• Demonstrated experience successfully communicating with internal and external constituents and working both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Demonstrated previous experience working with LAN, proxy servers, and networking (including design and implementation, infrastructure, troubleshooting, hardware configuration, and performance tuning).
• Previous experience with estimating project costs, determining and following timelines, and tracking budget expenses.
• Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of La Salle University.

Preferred Qualifications
• Previous experience working in higher education.
• Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certificate or equivalent.
• CompTIA networking certifications.
• Previous supervisory or team lead experience.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours
• Must be sufficiently agile to move about in tight or awkward spaces including sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, working on ladders, and working at heights.
• Responsibilities include frequently moving equipment and/or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Considered essential personnel and will be required to work during times of closure or service interruption.
• Must be available outside of business hours to respond to network issues and technical problems.
