Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Applicants are sought for three post doctoral scholar positions in STEM Education. The post doctoral scholars will work with an interdisciplinary team at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Minimum Qualifications:
The post doc will play an important role in facilitating collaborations with an interdisciplinary team. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Education, Engineering with a focus on education, or a related field. The candidate should have a promising record of research, publications, and strong communication skills. Successful candidates will have a background in performance-based funding, STEM education, and familiarity with community colleges and/or higher education systems. The candidate should also have strong data analytics using R or python. The candidate must have the ability to work independently to achieve project objectives, meet project deadlines and reporting requirements, and help mentor other group members, including undergraduates.

Seeking a post doctoral researcher with expertise in STEM education to assist in two projects: understanding the effects of performance-based funding in community colleges on STEM progression and student outcomes and the effects of homelessness on student progression in higher education. California’s community college system is the latest, and by far, the largest entry into the world of performance based funding (Fain 2018). In 2018, Governor Brown and the legislature changed the funding scheme for the community college system. The new funding formula targets access, equity and success (Chancellors Office 2018). The funding change transitions over two years (2018-19, 2020-21 fiscal years) and each community college district must align their master plan and local performance goals with the state metrics during this transition period. The anticipated scope of this project includes assembling a clearly articulated database describing “before conditions” for the community college campuses producing the greatest number of STEM students moving into the UC and CSU system. The database will include campus metrics that relate directly to STEM students. In addition, the postdoc will conduct a series of interviews with community college transfer students at each campus to provide a holistic (qualitative) perspective of student progress prior to the funding scheme change. These data will serve as the foundation for developing an “after database” that can track student success and how campuses evolve to take advantage of the funding metrics. A new project on homelessness and its effects on student progression will also be initiated and the postdoc will work collaboratively to identify a research design that can be undertaken. The postdoc will also work closely with collaborators at UC Davis and Sacramento State University and should be comfortable working in an interdisciplinary research environment. There will be opportunities for research dissemination, including but not limited to, conferences, workshops, and presentations to non-profits, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and government officials.
