Job Description

The Mathematics Department of the College of Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics Education, to begin in August 2020. Minimum qualifications include: (1) an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in mathematics education or a related field with a minimum 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics; (2) a minimum of one year of experience teaching K-12 mathematics. Responsibilities will include teaching Math for Elementary Teachers I and II (Math 2010 & Math 2020), Algebraic Reasoning with Modeling (Math 2000), Algebra for Secondary Mathematics Teaching (Math 3030), and lower-division mathematics courses as needed. Summary of Duties:

Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
• Teach high-quality elementary mathematics content courses as well as content courses for secondary math education majors.
• Prepare students to become effective teachers for diverse K-12 learners.
• Work collaboratively with university faculty members.
• Advise students regarding coursework, field work, and academic endeavors.
• Maintain and submit accurate and current reports and records of student accountability and performance.
• Provide high-quality mentoring to undergraduate students.
• Engage in and assist with ongoing program evaluation.
• Participate in professional development with peers and public school personnel.
• Prepare instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, exams, etc.) as necessary.
• Maintain a student-centered approach to education.
• Participate in activities associated with the Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Utah Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
• Remain familiar with current scholarship in math education, and contribute to advancing the scholarship through presentations and publications.

Required Qualifications
• An earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in mathematics education or a related field. Must have completed Ph.D. by July 1, 2020
• A minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics
• A minimum of one year of experience teaching K-12 mathematics.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of current trends in mathematics education and curriculum.
• Skill in the teaching of mathematics and the preparation of teachers of mathematics.
• Ability to effectively evaluate student performance and comprehension.
• Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• The ability to mentor or supervise mathematics education majors.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
• Ability to engage in scholarly work.
• Ability to serve effectively on committees and in other appointments that meet the needs of the department, college, university or community.
• Ability to interact with students, staff, and other faculty members in a collegial and productive manner.
• Graduation from an accredited institution with a Ph.D. in mathematics education and a master’s degree in mathematics as well as at least one year’s experience in teaching K-12 mathematics.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in mathematics as well as an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D.
• Evidence of successful university teaching with undergraduate students.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and support university and K-12 partnerships.
• Commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level using inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices.

Physical Requirements
Work is performed in a normal office and classroom environment.
