The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance and neuroscience.

The Department of Physics within MCS is committed to research at the frontier of science and instructing at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We are seeking a Senior Systems Software Engineer to be a part of a team that automates the systems of, and provides computing support to, the Physics Department.

This role includes staff primarily responsible for server management within a central group supporting enterprise wide systems or within a college or division coordinating multi-user systems. Responsibilities include installation, maintenance, configuration, server security and performance upgrades to support application resource management and availability. May be involved in the training and oversight of lower level staff.

Core responsibilities include:

Managing a comprehensive automation program for the Department, including, but not limited to, purchasing, grant management, graduate student admissions, and setting up student databases.
Providing technical support for the resolution of desktop and teaching laboratory computer hardware and software issues, both desk-side and remotely.
Logging and resolving support tickets in support system (ServiceNow)
Analyzing and making recommendations for hardware and software purchased and standardization.
Maintaining inventory of installed software, manage software licensing and creating policies and procedures for upgrades.
Documenting procedures, standards, standard methodologies, and common solutions.
Handle other duties as assigned

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or an equivalent combination of degrees.
3-5-year experience in operating systems/software engineering.

You should demonstrate:

Ability to identify and install relevant software packages and write scripts to ensure that these packages can be used for our purposes.
Experience with Goggle Apps, Dropbox, Box and other popular cloud collaboration technologies.
Coding experience with modern technologies, particularly Python, PHP, Git, and MySQL. PHP framework Laravel particularly useful.
Broad knowledge of Windows and MAC systems. Software/hardware maintenance and troubleshooting.
Excellent communication skills.
A strong desire to learn is required due to the quickly evolving technology.
