Job Description

The Geophysical Detection Programs Department at Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to investigate key questions in infrasound generation, propagation, and detection. These questions include: + How do underground explosions generate infrasound, and what is the resulting acoustic radiation pattern? + What is the detection range of an infrasound sensor on a stratospheric balloon? + Is it possible to characterize the lower atmosphere via the ambient sound field? + How do atmospheric turbulence and gravity waves affect infrasound propagation over short time scales? If one or more of these questions sound interesting to you, we’d like to talk to you. The ideal candidate will be driven and detail oriented. She or he will be a prolific writer with adedication to presenting research in peer-reviewed journal articles and at conferences. Women and minority candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

+ Recently obtained or finishing up a Ph. D. in Geophysics, Atmospheric Science, Physics, Acoustics, or another closely-related discipline

+ Demonstrated research experience in infrasound signal processing such as spectral methods, signal detection, signal association, and event location + Excellent communication skills, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience. + Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a SCI clearance + A strong peer-reviewed publication record

Department Description:

The Geophysical Detection Programs Department at Sandia National Laboratories develops and leads underground nuclear explosion detection and monitoring programs for global and U.S. national security purposes and also develops other geophysics-based detection and monitoring programs in other national security-related mission areas. We partner with other departments in the Proliferation Detection Programs group and with departments across Sandia to integrate multi-disciplinary capabilities into teams that can address broad national security needs in geophysically-based detection and monitoring. We strategically partner with our Federal sponsors, including NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development, AFTAC, and other government agencies to both define future and execute current detection and monitoring programs and also to identify and plan for near-, mid-, and long-term U.S. needs in these areas.

Security Clearance:
