Position Overview

A full time lab/field research assistant position is available to support research in the department of Higuchi Biosciences Center at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS). The research assistant will be responsible for coordinating and maintaining projects investigating the biosynthesis of primary metabolites and natural products. The projected start date for this position is March 1, 2020.

Job Description

40% - Protein production from microbial overexpression systems and protein purification using chromatographic methods. Enzymatic assays.

20% - Protein crystallization.

20% - Procurement and preparation of laboratory reagents (ordering, making solutions, preparing media). Maintenance of laboratory equipment. Other laboratory maintenance duties.

15% - Training students in use of the laboratory equipment.

5% - Serving as the laboratory safety officer.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biochemistry or closely related field.
Demonstrated knowledge of enzymology and/or protein structure demonstrated through experience and/or education.
Prior experience purifying proteins demonstrated through education or experience.
Demonstrated knowledge through education or experience with steady state kinetics.
Experience in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office) as evidenced in application materials.
Demonstrated organizational skills as demonstrated by application materials and previous experience.
Ability to work in a team, as demonstrated through experience.
Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in biochemistry or closely related field.
At least 1 year of experience in field research as a lab technician, or investigator.
Working knowledge of protein purification using chromatographic methods and performing steady state kinetics assays.
Experience in laboratory maintenance and safety protocols.
