Founded in 1935, Norfolk State University (NSU) is a public, comprehensive university with an enrollment of 5,600 students located in Norfolk, Virginia, a city of 300,000 along the Chesapeake Bay. NSU offers 32 undergraduate, 16 masters, 3 doctoral degree programs, and a myriad of programs within its academic colleges, schools, and units. In the last decade, NSU has invested significant resources in the campus infrastructure which led to the construction of a new student center, residential hall community, and several academic buildings. In the summer of 2019, Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, assumed the role of President at NSU and is committed to the success of students, strengthening the university infrastructure, and taking the university to the level of national prominence and excellence.

Reporting to the president, the vice president for student affairs (VPSA) serves as the chief student affairs officer for the campus and provides vision, leadership, and management for the division of student affairs. The VPSA serves as an effective advocate for the student body by staying abreast of issues impacting students, enhancing the learning and living environment, and partnering with academic administrators and faculty to foster and sustain an integrated and collaborative approach to instruction. The VPSA has strategic oversight for career services; counseling; disability services; international and scholar services; residence life/housing; student activities; student health services; dean of students; judicial affairs; student support services; upward bound; and veteran affairs. The VPSA provides leadership for over 70 full time staff and oversees a budget of $17 million.

An earned doctorate and at least ten years or progressive experience in student affairs are required. The successful candidate will also have proven experience managing budgets within a large, complex, decentralized organization; extensive knowledge of student development theory and student leadership, and student challenges; and demonstrated experience creating and implementing strategic approaches to resolving complex organizational issues within a university setting. In addition, the ideal candidate will be a demonstrated innovative, strategic, and resourceful student affairs leader who produces a positive relationship with students and student organizations, builds consensus among constituents, and is an agent of organizational change.
