The Project on Middle East Political Science (POMEPS) is a national network of scholars based at GWU’s Institute for Middle East Studies and currently seeks a Program Associate. This position will support the project in all of its capacities so that the Elliott School may continue to receive grant funding for this project in the future. This position supports the Elliott School’s commitment to Scholarship, Teaching, Ethics, and Practice, by developing the field of political science and fostering the next generation of scholars and scholarship on the Middle East. POMEPS is unique in its mission and scope and its association with GWU broadly, and the Elliott School specifically, has increased recognition of the institution’s prestige among other top academics in the field. This position is essential for the continued success of this project.

The purpose of this position is to provide coordination and program management on behalf of an academic program or initiative. This role will serve as a point of contact for the program, will answer program questions from faculty, staff, and students, and will provide functional support for the program administration. Functional support could include answering most inquiries, enrollment guidance, managing web presence and some marketing efforts, drafting program materials, planning and executing events, tracking spending and processing payments, preparing and analyzing reports, and similar duties. Often these positions make recommendations to policy and procedure. Often these roles are tasked with outreach to other GW stakeholders in order to assist in maintaining standard operational efficiencies. Typical duties often are administrative in nature including tasks that are routine, and under general or limited supervision of more senior personnel within the department, or program.

The POMEPS Program Associate reports to the director of POMEPS. In addition to managing the two main grants that fund POMEPS operations (the Henry Luce Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York) the Program Associate will also assist the director with any other special grants that forward its goals.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Editing/Posting: Edits papers for inclusion in POMEPS publications. Prepares content for introduction to POMEPS Series and POMEPS Briefs collections. May also assist in soliciting, editing, and publishing articles to the Monkey Cage at The Washington Post.
• Budget and Project Management: Develops and manages project budgets. Implements and oversees financial control procedures, and approves expenditures. Oversees the record management of project-related invoices, jobs and contractual agreements. Ensures compliance with GWU policies and grant contracts. Investigates new grant opportunities for POMEPS.
• Events: Initiates, plans, organizes, executes, and supports POMEPS conferences, workshops, public panels and books discussions, networking receptions, and other events.
• Communications/Outreach: Manages POMEPS outreach and public relations activities. Develops and leads the implementation of communication strategic initiatives. Works with the graphic designer and printer for production of POMEPS publications.
• Website creative development and maintenance: Manages POMEPS website; Provides written content, photos, and video for website; Works with web developer on website design.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree with significant coursework and/or background in the Middle East.
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail
• Event planning skills
• Experience with website development and maintenance (preferably WordPress)
• Copy editing experience/professional writing background
• Prior professional experience in either project or program management
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to network and promote project
• Strong, demonstrated teamwork skills
• Ability to be flexible, work independently, assume responsibility, and to initiate new ideas
• Excellent ability in Microsoft Word and Excel
• Willingness to work a limited number of evening and weekend hours
• Ability to travel internationally and domestically for events
• Grant management experience including budget preparation, monitoring, and evaluation
• Experience with grant writing and applications
• Additional language skills: Arabic preferred
