Northern State University seeks a Dean of the Millicent Atkins School of Education, a full-time, twelve-month position, to begin June 2020. The Millicent Atkins School of Education is a regional leader in educator preparation, health and physical education, and psychology and counseling. The School prepares the majority of teachers and counselors in the region, playing a significant role in the state. The Dean will lead a School that received a $15 million donation and will help shape how this gift is used to continue the upward trajectory of the School. A major priority of the School is to strengthen the partnership with the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, whose brand-new facility is contiguous to Northern State University.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in education or a related discipline represented within the School from an accredited institution; a strong record of teaching, research, and service; demonstrated creativity and success in developing programs to meet the needs of the region; successful leadership experience at the chair or dean level; and experience with curriculum management, assessment, and accreditation. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, innovative and experienced leader who is committed to strategic enrollment growth and guiding the Millicent Atkins School of Education to regional prominence.

Responsibilities: The Dean will report to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs with the following responsibilities:

• Ensuring high standards in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes.
• Promoting high quality instruction, student success, and faculty development.
• Preparing and managing budgets and overall administration in support of the School.
• Representing the School at professional meetings and in the local and state communities.
• Providing leadership in the recruitment, retention, and evaluation of department chairs, faculty, and other personnel.
• Fostering research, scholarship, and grant writing with faculty and students.
• Leading faculty/staff to anticipate and address student and K-12 school needs.
• Demonstrating commitment to an inclusive, equitable, and diverse working and learning environment.
• Working collaboratively with the University’s leadership team to advance the institution’s strategic priorities.
• Be an engaged partner in enrollment management, working with the University Admissions Department on effective enrollment strategies for the School.
• Have an entrepreneurial approach to curricular collaboration, development and strategic planning.
• Strengthen partnership with the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in preparing future teachers who may work with students with visual impairment.
