Founded in 1920 and situated on 82 acres in West Haven, CT, the University of New Haven is a private, comprehensive university with an enrollment of 6,800 students located near the Connecticut coast and approximately 80 miles from New York City. With its distinctive colleges and schools, the University offers 55 undergraduate degrees, 33 master’s degrees, and a doctorate in criminal justice; additionally, each student must complete one form of experiential learning, such as an internship, a faculty-mentored research project, a study abroad experience or an academic service-learning project in the community. Under the leadership of President Stephen H. Kaplan, the University of New Haven has completed $300 million in capital construction and infrastructure improvements since 2010. The institution will be celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2020 with a number of special events highlighting its history and looking forward to what is planned for the future.

Reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success, the Dean of Students serves as the chief student affairs officer for the campus and provides vision, leadership, and management for all student affairs activities. The Dean works closely with enrollment management and academic affairs to provide a dynamic and progressive student experience, also serving as a direct liaison between administration/faculty and students. The Dean has strategic oversight for Campus Access Services, Career Services, Counseling & Psychological Services, Graduate Student Life, Health Services, Intercultural Relations, International Services, New Student Orientation Programs, Office of the Dean of Students, Residential Life, Student Activities, Student Conduct, Student Government, and Title IX. The Dean leads a professional staff of approximately 70, including nine direct reports, and oversees a $2.8 million budget.

Master’s degree with extensive senior level experience in the administration and management of an integrated, forward thinking student affairs department is required (earned doctorate preferred). The successful candidate will also have a proven track record of substantive achievement in many, if not all, areas under the supervision of the Dean of Students; achievement of successful partnerships with faculty, administrative colleagues, alumni, trustees, parents, and students; and proven experience in achieving the necessary commitment and results associated with diversity initiatives, retention and the need to advance the mission of the University. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess excellent communication, problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to resolve complex and potentially litigious matters; proven and demonstrated leadership capabilities; the proven ability to efficiently work in a diverse, multicultural setting; and the skills to effectively manage human and fiscal resources.
