Job Summary
Cleveland State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Dance. Responsibilities: Directorship of the CSU Dance Company, which involves choreographing, rehearsing, and production of performances including annual main-stage and associated activities; teaching 16 credit hours during the academic year; advising and mentoring students; curriculum development; performing department and college service within a liberal arts environment; and proactive participation in developing and implementing outreach programs. The ability to contribute through creative work, teaching, and service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community is expected of all faculty.
Dance at Cleveland State University is designed around the mission to make dance accessible to all students and the surrounding community, from novice to professional. The CSU Arts Campus is located in the nationally recognized Cleveland Playhouse Square district, which includes beautiful state of the art dance studios and access to the Allen Theater Complex. Students perform and choreograph in the CSU Dance Company, as well as learn works by nationally and regionally renowned dance artists. Centered in an active dance community, there are many opportunities for engaged learning experiences and to network within the professional community via master classes and workshops including programming with GroundWorks DanceTheater, our professional dance company in residence and community partner, DANCECleveland. Additionally, the historic CSU Summer Dance Workshop, for three decades has brought renowned dance artists representing diverse forms to campus for intensive study, performances and seminars. Our B. A. in dance includes a comprehensive curriculum of course work in technique, composition, repertory, history and pedagogy with a choice of two tracks: Creative Process and Performance or Dance in Community. The Creative Process and Performance track includes additional coursework in creative process and technology, providing dance artists with the skills and experiences necessary to express their art from independent and unique perspectives. The second track, titled Dance in Community, requires additional coursework selected from CSU Colleges and prepares dance artists to interact in positive ways within their communities.

Minimum Qualifications
MFA in dance or equivalent completed by July 1, 2020; evidence of high quality professional creative work (performance and choreography); prior university teaching experience; and demonstrated work with diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic proponent of a multi-focused approach to teaching including:
• Teaching all levels of contemporary modern dance technique from novice to pre-professional.
• Experience in choreographing and directing students at the university level.
• Demonstrated experience taking original work from the studio to the main stage.
• A minimum of 3 years post-graduate college/university teaching and 5 years professional dance experience in concert dance forms.
• Ability to teach several of the following is desirable: dance pedagogy, dance appreciation, composition, kinesiology, community-based dance and a somatic discipline.
• Evidence of engagement with dance in the wider community as a vehicle for positive and active relationships for all participants.
• Evidence of success with creating a safe and inclusive environment for learning.
