The F&M Diplomats is a member of the Centennial Conference and the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA).

The Director of Athletics & Recreation is responsible for providing the leadership, development and the strategic direction for 27 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics programs with over 600 scholar athletes as well as the recreation and intramural program which serves the entire student body and all College employees. The director leads a team of coaches and staff with a unified vision and direction that will enable athletics to advance competitively while creating an ethos that supports scholar athlete development.

Reporting to the Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs, the director will be responsible for continuing to enhance the competitiveness of a Division III/Division I intercollegiate athletics program that is imbedded in a strong liberal arts, academically centered learning environment. As a strong institutional partner, the director provides leadership to staff and coaches, and works collaboratively and productively with academic affairs, student affairs, and health and counseling around an emerging institutional health and wellness agenda. The director works collaboratively with coaches and the office of admissions on the recruitment of scholar athletes; will continue the focus on developing relationships with alumnae, particularly in support of the athletics program; will encourage and promote an inclusive community among all students, faculty, and staff; and will continue to advance the recreation and intramural program. The director fosters principles that encourage integrity, student well-being, diversity, and inclusiveness, while promoting an environment of excellence and success.

The director will develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures that promote best practices and address personnel development, financial management, facility renovation and enhancement, alumni and community relations, and compliance and regulatory expectations, while advancing a high level of integration of athletics and recreation into the overall student experience. As a senior member within the Division of Student Affairs, the director collaborates with other offices within the division, and other key stakeholders such as Academic Affairs, Finance and Administration, Enrollment Management, Facilities Management and Campus Planning, and College Advancement and Alumni Engagement.

The director leads and manages an organization with an annual operating budget of over $7.5 million, 27 Division III intercollegiate teams, including Division I wrestling, approximately 600 scholar-athletes, 150 student employees, and over 100 full- and part-time positions throughout the department.

A master’s degree is required; significant, progressive professional experience leading a complex, dynamic, and diverse department is preferred. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics administration, student-athlete development, NCAA compliance within a Division III environment, and the role of fundraising in supporting strategic and operating objectives. A collaborative management approach, coupled with superior communication and relationship-building skills, strong planning and fiscal competencies, an understanding of the role of enrollment at a small, private college, a familiarity with program development and assessment, excellent problem solving abilities, and demonstrated respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of campus life will be important considerations in the selection of the next director of athletics & recreation.
