Job Purpose

The Chief of Medicine Service at the Ben Taub Hospital (BTH) is responsible for the Clinical and Academic activities of the department of medicine faculty and trainees of Baylor College Medicine (BCM) positioned at Harris Health System. The Chief of Medicine Service at BTH reports to the Department of Medicine Chair and the BTH Executive Vice President. Chief of Medicine Service at BTH will hold the Herman Brown Teaching Professorship, and also serve as Vice Chair for the Department of Medicine at BCM. 

Job Duties

Duties and Responsibilities
•    Collaborate with the Chair on the strategic planning for the Department of Medicine at BCM.
•    Work with Medicine Service Leadership group on BTH/Harris Health Service activities.
•    Evaluate the strategic planning and implementation activities for each section on an annual basis.
•    Recruit, deploy, and manage faculty including BTH section chiefs at BTH and/or affiliated Harris Health System ambulatory clinics.
•    Develop and implement operational strategies for quality improvement/performance improvement activities for BTH and Harris Health System.
•    Foster excellence in medical education; participate in major teaching conferences (i.e. Morning Report, Noon Conference, and Performance Improvement Conferences).
•    Work with the Department’s financial leadership to review productivity of Sections and faculty members who bill for services at Harris Health System; provide oversight on expenses and revenues.  
•    Provide oversight and leadership for the BTH Vice-Chiefs for Clinical Activities, Research, and Medical Education.
•    Participate in the Department of Medicine monthly Medical Executive Committee meetings; BTH Medical Executive Board meetings; Administrative, Quality, and Pavilion meetings designated by Harris Health System Executive Leadership. 
•    Chief of Medicine Service will hold the Herman Brown Teaching Professorship and report activities on this position on a regular basis to The Brown Foundation

•    The total number of trainees in BCM department of medicine is 235 residents and 167 fellows. 
•    The total monthly number of internal medicine trainees at Ben Taub Hospital is ~135 including 68 residents and 67 fellows.  
•    The total number of BTH faculty providers is 164 distributed among a total of 88 FTE’s.
