Job Description

Minimum Position Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area and ten years of appropriate experience such as managing professional/technical and administrative staff in the field of Environmental Health and Safety.

Special Conditions
The department is especially interested in candidates with an advanced degree such as a Master’s in a relevant area; relevant professional certification such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Health Physicist, Registered Biosafety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist; EH&S experience in an academic or research environment; ability to serve as radiation safety officer or biological safety officer.

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday
8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
May need to work, travel, and respond to emergencies beyond normal work schedule.

Duties & Responsibilities
Serves as the chief EH&S official for the University, developing, promoting, causing implementation of, providing oversight for, and reviewing policies and programs for environmental protection and occupational health and safety, including industrial hygiene, radiation safety, chemical hygiene, biological safety, hazardous waste management, biological waste management, radioactive waste management, laboratory safety, fire prevention, life safety, and general safety. Provides or directs oversight for related programs executed by other departments. Informs upper management of significant issues impacting safety and health of personnel, environmental protection, risks to facilities, and regulatory compliance.

Duties & Responsibilities
Maintains knowledge of current laws, regulations, codes, consensus standards, and best practices in EH&S. Monitors, assesses, and communicates regulatory requirements impacting University operations, goals, and objectives.

Serves as liaison to applicable regulatory agencies; represents EH&S internally to administrators, faculty, staff, students, related University committees. Executes associated technical functions, administers databases, provides briefings and training, and serves as a member of crisis management team.

Oversees staff; assigns tasks; monitors and evaluates performance; provides advice and counsel. Establishes and implements short-term and long-term goals and objectives, monitors and evaluates program effectiveness, and implements or recommends changes required for program improvement.
