Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
The Associate Director of Research for the Pauley Heart Center will be responsible for directing and daily administration of Center programming and will be involved in strategic planning aimed at promoting Center initiatives. Key programs and initiatives include: (1) advancing cardiovascular science education by providing programmatic training to VCU health system faculty and staff, regional physicians, undergraduate and high school students from across Virginia and the community (2) furthering clinical and basic science cardiovascular research through government and industry sponsored clinical trials and translational research (3) providing enhanced cardiovascular care for VCU patients by facilitating the incorporation of a more cross-disciplinary clinical approach.
The Associate Director will work to assemble and manage teams to plan, facilitate, administer and maintain (1) training and educational programs (2) submission of federal and non-federal clinical and translational research proposals (3) submission and tracking of manuscripts and other presentations by center members (4) pre and post award management of sponsored awards and subawards (5) management of center clinical research projects. This position will serve as a senior research administrator within the School of Medicine, ensuring the Pauley Heart Center management of sponsored research conforms to sponsoring agencies, University, and School of Medicine Office of Research Administration requirements.

Minimum Hiring Standards
Master’s in relevant scientific field plus significant experience in clinical and/or translational research and administration of research.
Minimum 5 years of experience working in Cardiology and Oncology clinical or translational research. Minimum 5 years of experience in research administration including significant experience managing and reviewing clinical research regulatory submissions. Knowledge of pre and post award administration activities. Prior supervisory experience.
Ability to exercise independent judgement in decision making, program management, and interpretation of complex rules and regulations. Dedication to leading staff that provide high levels of customer service is required. Must have strong analytical, problem solving, and time management skills. Must be able to manage multiple projects and make staff assignments to effectively handle changes in work assignments, competing priorities, and deadlines. Proficiency with computers and computer software and the ability to learn new systems quickly is required. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment.

Preferred Hiring Standards
PhD in relevant scientific field plus significant experience in clinical and/or translational research and administration of research and certification in clinical research training.
Greater than 5 years of experience working in Cardiology and Oncology research. Experience with preparing and publishing scientific manuscripts, presenting research data and in preparation of proposals for federal and foundation sponsors. Significant experience preparing clinical research regulatory submissions. Prior experience developing and delivering training to research staff as well as knowledge of electronic research management systems preferred. Experience developing and maintaining guidance documents and resource materials. Prior experience conducting workload assessments and managing priorities across multiple research projects. Experience working for an academic medical center will be preferred, including a thorough understanding of state, federal, and University procedures as well as an understanding of IRB and regulatory agency requirements as they pertain to sponsored research management.
