SCIENTIST / BIOLOGIST: Al-Power, Inc. is developing new algal strains for production of renewable biogenic hydrogen. This position serves as a Scientist in the field of Biology reporting to the Project Manager. Under general direction, specific duties include but are not limited to:

75% RESEARCH: Conducts complex experiments on metabolic engineering of microalgae. Maintains and prepares bacterial and algal cultures for experiments. Performs gene construction, transformations of E. coli and microalgae (Chlamydomonas). Analyzes genetic transformants using DNA, RNA, and protein analysis. Conducts screening of best, stable transformed algal strains with desired characteristics including hydrogen production bioassays. Prepares and maintains the photobioreactors and performs experiments, sample collection and analysis, including nutrient levels, cell density, chlorophyll and starch bioassays. Performs biomarker transcription analysis. Analyses experimental data and recommends appropriate directions of further experiments. Reviews literature and assists the Project Manager in strategy selection by determining appropriate experimental procedures. Prepares revisions of experimental procedures. Consults with the Project Manager and staff on a variety of methodology and strategy issues. Troubleshoots experimental setup to achieve expected performance.
15% REPORTING: Prepares written reports for each experiment in a standard format specified in the company’s policies. Reviews and summarizes specified sets of experiments and submits quarterly progress reports. Formats, proofreads, and corrects grammar/spelling/punctuation for each report to ensure accuracy of presented information.
5% EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE: Oversees /maintains equipment assigned to the project.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related field.
Strong working knowledge in genetic engineering - research, interpret and apply.
Hand-on experience in sterile techniques. Thoroughness.
Extensive experience in DNA, RNA, and protein analysis.
Reason logically and analyze data in order to reach accurate and defendable conclusions.
Get along with people and establish cooperative working relationships within a team.
Effectively communicate information to and consult with the Project Manager and staff.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experiences: working with microalgae; metabolic engineering; working with Western blot analysis.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in laboratory in Baton Rouge. LA, Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
