Job-Specific Responsibilities

Harvard Business School seeks classroom support for the MBA Program. Working within the case-method format of the HBS MBA classroom, scribes are responsible for noting attendance and capturing notes related to class discussion, indicating individual student speakers along with a short sentence paraphrasing key points made by each student. Scribes will be responsible for tracking the information real-time on a laptop in the MBA classroom, ensuring accuracy of notes and timeliness of delivery of notes to faculty. Other duties as required.

Key Qualities: Keen appreciation of the HBS classroom culture. A successful Scribe will be professional at all times, operating like a court stenographer; they will be punctual and reliable, and remain silently focused on the tasks at hand; they will maintain decorum and objectivity during and after class, never reacting to comments or individuals. Scribes must be excellent listeners; must be confident in their typing skills, have the ability to quickly touch-type, and be able to record notes in the midst of a fast-paced classroom environment; be able to listen to classroom conversation, synthesize its contents, and type a short paraphrase of that content in real time.

Basic Qualifications

BA/BS or equivalent experience required.

Additional Qualifications

Excellent listening skills.
Strong writing and grammar in English.
Ability to synthesize and capture essence of fast-paced, complex remarks in a business academic environment.
Attention to detail, punctuality, reliability, flexibility, ability to work autonomously, and appropriate professional behavior and dress are essential.
Must be fluent user of Microsoft Office.
Familiarity with business concepts preferred.

Additional Information

Classes are generally 80 minutes long, running from 8:30am or 9:10am until 2:45pm or 3:15pm each weekday. Scribe hours typically begin at 8:00am at 8:30am before classes start, and end shortly after the last class finishes. Occasional late afternoon/early evening coverage may be necessary based on the class schedule.

There is an occasional optional opportunity to work additional hours for inter-departmental administrative support.

You may be assigned to a Scribe Floater position. In addition to scribing classes as assigned, the Scribe Floater will also provide support to MBA Program departments, including but not limited to administrative tasks, general office and event support, and assisting with exam plagiarism checking using the Turnitin software. Duties include uploading final exams into Turnitin software, analyzing results for potential issues, and communicating results to the Director for Community Standards.

Both the Scribe Floater role and any optional assignments require strong Microsoft Excel skills; experience working with large data sets; event planning or hospitality experience; writing and editing skills; exceptional attention to detail; a high level of organization; and comfort with a flexible schedule.
