Who We Are
The Department of Biological Chemistry in the University of Michigan Medical School educates and trains undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate and medical students in modern biochemistry. Discoveries in biochemistry are foundational to all of biomedicine and the work in this department spans a wide range of topics including hemostasis, metabolism, gene expression, CRISPR biology, organelle function, and more. The Department of Biological Chemistry at Michigan Medicine is looking for a Chief Department Administrator (CDA). The CDA will partner with the Department Chair to manage departmental operations and accomplish strategic initiatives of the department that are aligned with the overall vision of Michigan Medicine.

Report to the Department Chair and have additional accountability to the Medical School’s Executive Director for Administration and Chief Operating Officer.
Partner with the Department Chair and the leadership team to align departmental goals with the Michigan Medicine strategy, and implement a plan to accomplish these goals.
Manage the department’s financial performance, human resources, service agreements with internal and external stakeholders, research administration, space utilization, educational programs, and administrative activities including assets and commodities management, regulatory compliance, capital projects, IT operations and internal controls.
Partner with the Department Chair in all areas of faculty development and support including appointment, privileging, and faculty satisfaction.
Partner with the Medical School Dean's Office Faculty Affairs and Finance teams for faculty economics and planning.
Champion DE&I efforts within the department to foster and sustain an environment that is inclusive, supportive, and caring.
Lead a cohesive team of administrative professionals, including supporting professional development and personal growth.
Required Qualifications*
MBA, MPH or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A minimum of 5+ years of experience in a related field.
Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and data analysis.
Experience managing research and grant activity and knowledge of pre- and post- award management and research compliance.
Experience managing gift funds and other financial assets.
Experience preparing contracts and proposals.
Knowledge in areas of research laboratory operations and funds flow in the organization.
Experience supervising a team of 5 or more direct reports.
