The Harvard FAS Informatics Group and The Global Computational Biology & Digital Sciences Department (GCBDS) at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma (BI) seek a bioinformatician for single cell analysis, focusing on methodological development and analysis of single-cell RNA-seq data. Based at Harvard within the Harvard FAS Informatics group, this position will be dedicated to ongoing collaborative projects between Harvard and BI, focused on data intergration and comparative analysis of multi-species single cell RNA-seq data, and methodological improvements to better visualize and understand large scale integrative datasets.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Based within the Informatics group at Harvard, the successful candidate will:

Lead bioinformatics efforts to develop novel methods for understanding and visualizing single cell datasets, with a focus on expanding machine learning classification methods being developed by Harvard and BI
Work closely with scientists at Boehringer Ingelheim to analyze and draw meaningful biological conclusions from public and newly generated single cell datasets of disease relevance
Integrate data from diverse sources into common frameworks to directly contribute to BI pre-clinical research efforts
Have the opportunity to travel to the BI research center in Southern Germany and play an active role in the GCBDS department
The successful candidate will be someone with a strong background in single cell analysis, bioinformatics, and statistics

About FAS Informatics: The Informatics group lies at the intersection of scientific research and high performance computing, and works with a number of research groups across campus on a range of methods. We are a collaborative group of computational biologists and bioinformatics scientists who develop and apply cutting-edge approaches to a range of biological questions.

About GCBDS @ Boehringer Ingelheim: We are part of our Discovery Research area within our Innovation Unit. Through computational methods combined with disease biology we seek novel insights into human disease, to drive decision making in order to identify impactful first-in-class therapies for patients. We accelerate and incubate the digital transformation of our Innovation Unit. We run a very exciting portfolio of digital initiatives and work across the Innovation Unit and the IT organization.

Basic Qualifications

Masters degree or higher in bioinformatics, computer science, genomics, or a related field, with at least 5 years hands-on experience with bioinformatics methods
Expertise in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics (such as Python or R)

Additional Qualifications

PhD in a relevant field is strongly preferred
Expertise in the analysis of RNA-seq data, prior experience with single-cell data strongly preferred
Fluency with Linux shell scripting and high performance computing
