Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Beckstead Lab is looking for a full time Research Technician or Senior Research Technician to conduct basic research on motivated behavior and reinforcement in mice. Specific responsibilities are varied and include: performing behavioral experiments including operant drug self-administration, locomotor, and other assays; performing general duties to keep the lab running continuously: ordering supplies and reagents, maintaining an appropriate number of carbogen and oxygen tanks, acting as a liaison with vendors, maintaining equipment, and making buffers and agar plates. Also, the candidate will share responsibility with another team member for organization and maintenance of the lab's animal colonies: making sure the lab has enough mice on hand for all studies to proceed continuously, insuring compliance with animal use oversight, monitoring the health and welfare of the mice, acting as a liaison with animal care personnel, monitoring the diet of some groups of mice, and mouse husbandry. Finally, after the applicant is trained duties may evolve to include performing survival surgeries on rodents (including jugular catheter implantation, virus injections, and cannulae placement). Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree typically in one of the biological sciences or equivalent years of professional, paid, relevant laboratory experience and basic understanding of laboratory procedures.

Bachelors Degree

Work Hours: Typically Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, but can vary with requirements of behavioral studies.

Preferred Qualifications:
2 years of relevant lab experience. Candidates must have experience with rodents, knowledge of basic mouse handling, statistical procedures, as well as methods and practices typical to neuroscience. They must also possess advanced computer skills (or the ability to learn those skills) including data acquisition, Microsoft Office software, order processing, and methods for backing up data. Finally, the candidate must demonstrate ethical behavior at all times and a high level of scientific rigor, must be detail oriented and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Physical Demands:
Regularly required to stand, use manual dexterity, talk or hear; Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms; occasionally sit; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; vision abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or rodent dander. May work with toxic, caustic chemicals, radioactive materials, liquid nitrogen, human tissue or blood. Potential risk of electrical shock. Occasional exposure to cold 4C, and/or extreme cold -80C from freezers. Noise level is usually moderate.
