Job Description

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position has general laboratory oversight for conducting experiments in bacterial and eukaryotic cells. Assesses the roles of specific proteins in regulating the novel cell division process of Chlamydia


Conducts cloning and expression of proteins in bacterial systems.
Performs PCR amplification and mutagenesis techniques to study protein function during chlamydial cell division.
Performs assays to include agarose and SDS gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting.
Uses microscopic analyses of fixed and live cells using immunofluorescence techniques to evaluate protein functions.
Uses epifluorescence and confocal microscopes to visualize florescent proteins.
Analyzes data using Microsoft Excel.
Generates data for publication using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
Provides supervision to lab technicians, as necessary.
Conducts molecular biology, cloning, protein analysis, microscopy lab maintenance, and figure preparation.
Performs other related duties assigned.


EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in one of the sciences. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of research laboratory experience; OR Master’s Degree will be accepted in lieu of experience. (Experience using PCR for cloning and mutagenesis of proteins to visualize the distribution and assess the function of proteins during chlamydial cell division preferred). (One or more undergraduate research experiences preferred)

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate must be able to pass Department of Justice Security Risk Assessment for work with Select Agents and Toxins.

Skill necessary to problem solve during microscopic analyses.
Ability to multitask efficiently.
Ability to supervise technicians and analyze pertinent data.
Knowledge and familiarity of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Knowledge and familiarity of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
Knowledge of basic cell biology, chemistry, and statistics.
Skill to perform sterile cell culture techniques with BSL2 bacteria and mammalian cell lines.
