Job Description

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Clinical Pathology and Immunology Laboratory (CP&I lab) is operational M-F 8am-7pm, Sat. , Sun. & holidays 8am-1pm and is comprised of 8 smaller laboratory entities: Special Chemistry, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Cytology, and Immunology.

The CP&I lab has three major functions: it is primarily a teaching/service laboratory, aiding in the teaching of Clinical Pathology to veterinary students through providing laboratory results for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients admitted to the Veterinary Health Complex (VHC). This laboratory also provides clinical laboratory testing for research cases in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and functions as a service laboratory to CVM researchers.

Additionally, it functions as a reference laboratory for selected tests sent in by referring veterinarians. Since the lab began in 1984, our services have expanded to include a large variety of tests with approximately 550 orderable tests and 80 test profiles. The laboratory also serves as a central receiving area for other labs on the CVM campus. An average of 4,000 accessions/month are performed in this laboratory.

Essential Job Duties
The Medical Technologist performs testing in cytology, blood bank, coagulation, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and point of care. This position may function as a “floater position” during day shift, analysis of samples for emergency cases that come into the veterinary health complex in the evening, and analysis of research samples. This position also provides training to emergency personnel who perform lab testing, junior technicians, technical staff and limited teaching of veterinary students.

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.

Departmental Required Skills
Experience with laboratory testing and analysis.
Experience with the oversight of a medical or veterinary laboratory setting.
Experience with testing in cytology, blood bank, coagulation, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and point of care.
Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
BS with major in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Biology.
3 years experience in clinical pathology.
ASCP Certification or equivalent.
