Job Description
CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS, UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM – The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks an innovative, visionary and inclusive leader to Chair the Department of Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. Research in the Department covers the areas of analysis and partial differential equations, computational mathematics and numerical analysis, differential equations and mathematical physics, differential geometry and geometric analysis, dynamical systems and ergodic theory, probability, and topology. The Department has approximately 20 faculty members, 100 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students, and serves a critical and central teaching role in UAB’s core curriculum. See the department web site for more information: http://www.uab.edu/cas/mathematics.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished and funded scholar with the administrative experience and vision necessary to lead a Department that emphasizes both cutting-edge research and excellent undergraduate and graduate instruction. The department moved to a newly constructed campus building in summer 2019, and several new faculty hires are expected in the next few years. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in mathematics or a closely related discipline, and a distinguished record of research, teaching, and service that merits appointment as a Full Professor with tenure. A record of excellence in the administration and delivery of undergraduate mathematics education is required.
UAB enrollment grew to more than 22,563 students in the fall of 2020, marking a fifth consecutive year of record enrollment and record student retention. The university provides a collaborative learning experience to prepare diverse students for rewarding careers and lives that benefit society and our regional and global economy. UAB is ranked in the top 20 among public universities in the US in terms of federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state. In addition, UAB offers exceptional graduate and professional programs that prepare students to lead, teach, conduct research, provide professional services, become the prominent scholars and societal leaders of the future, and contribute to our region’s and our nation’s prosperity. UAB ranks in the top ten nationally for student diversity. Spanning more than 100 city blocks, UAB is the state of Alabama’s largest single employer with some 25,000 employees and has an annual, state-wide economic impact exceeding $7.15 billion.
Applicants should upload the following materials: a cover letter outlining their interest, a detailed curriculum vita, and the names of three individuals who could prepare letters of reference in support of the application. References will not be contacted until later phases of the search, and only after informing the applicant. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2020 and continue on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Questions may be addressed to Dr. Ilias Perakis (iperakis@uab.edu), Search Committee Chair.
