The director will work closely with frontline fundraising staff, Foundation leadership and the University President to develop strategies encouraging proactive research and prospect management efforts to ensure Ball State University is building a broad-based principal and major gift pipeline that ensures fundraising success. The director provides leadership and sets the strategic direction for prospect identification and qualification, proactive research, and prospect strategy. The position is a critical player in building and growing a sustainable donor pipeline.

Job Function:

The director will work closely with frontline fundraising staff, Foundation leadership and the University President to develop strategies encouraging proactive research and prospect management efforts to ensure Ball State University is building a broad-based principal and major gift pipeline that ensures fundraising success. The director provides leadership and sets the strategic direction for prospect identification and qualification, proactive research, and prospect strategy. The position is a critical player in building and growing a sustainable donor pipeline.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Education:

Master's degree.

Minimum Experience:

At least three years of professional work experience in higher education, non-profit or equivalent setting; three or more years of fundraising, development, analytics or research experience.

Preferred Experience:

More than five years of prospect management and/or research experience; thorough understanding of and experience in major gift prospect identification and moves management within a university or related setting; Ability to interpret, analyze and summarize complex biographical, business and financial data; Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of philanthropy and in particular the ethics and best practices set by APRA (Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement); working experience with Blackbaud and Fundraiser Performance Management; Familiarity with the demands of Prospect Management/Research during a capital campaign.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify, evaluate and recommend current and potential major gift prospects and assess their ability to financially support Ball State and achieve the fundraising goals of the University; Provide creative solutions to uncover new prospects and increase understanding of current prospects and donor relationships.
  • Produce in-depth, well-written prospect profiles, briefings, and research based on datamining and analysis from the donor database and external markers of high-quality donors.
  • Partner with AVP of Development and Directors of Development to identify portfolio management and research needs; Build and monitor prospect portfolios for development staff; Manage the pipeline process as well as assign/remove prospects from portfolios.
  • Lead quarterly prospect review meetings with each Director of Development and the AVP of Development; Provide thorough reports using NXT and FPM that outline officer activity (qualification, cultivation, solicitation, etc.); Track and report on progress via established metrics to management.
  • Lead prospect management/research team and activities; Conduct annual reviews; Provide clear direction and oversight of all department activities in order to develop and achieve annual goals, including budgeting, planning and staff development.
  • Establish and implement departmental policies and procedures and other documents to ensure research meets the highest standards of analysis, writing, and visual presentation; Ensure all legal privacy requirements and ethical standards are upheld.
  • Introduce and manage special projects which may involve researching new constituents or metro areas, financial trends, industry analysis, and fundraising campaigns; keep current on
    research and fundraising trends through regular contact with development and research colleagues at peer institutions as well as vendors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
