Job Description

The dean is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the operational, personnel, budgetary, fundraising and student activities of the college and providing leadership and direction in the development and implementation of curricula and academic programming. The dean is expected to foster interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborations within the college, across campus, and in the community; promote open, transparent, and inclusive communication; and facilitate strategic planning and goal development across the academic departments and units in unison with the campus's broader strategic plan. The dean will serve as a visible and external advocate for the College, both on campus and within the local healthcare community, to sustain and deepen partnerships and generate new streams of revenue and health-related programs that support the teaching, research and service goals of the school.
Ball State University and the College of Health seek a strategic, collaborative and community-minded leader to serve as its next dean. The incoming dean will have the opportunity to lead the college and serve as a member of an engaged and innovative academic leadership team as the University implements a new strategic plan and decentralized, incentive-based budget model.

Job Function:

Minimum Education:

Advanced degree in the health professions or a relevant and related field.

Preferred Education:

Doctoral degree in related field or discipline.

Minimum Experience:

A demonstrated track record of progressive administrative leadership experience in an academic setting, health profession or relevant and related field.

Academic record or equivalent experience that meets the requirements of the rank of professor in one of the units of the college.

Preferred Experience:

• Proven ability to conceive, implement, and foster a shared vision; ability to imagine new possibilities for the college and develop strategic directions for the future as well as the organization-wide energy to execute and deliver on the vision.
• Record of commitment to regional and professional accreditation standards for the unit and demonstrated understanding of compliance and resource needs for accreditation and regulatory processes in the health professions
• Record of commitment to and leadership on issues of inclusion, diversity, equity, free speech, and the capacity and willingness to advance inclusive excellence
• Record of success managing a complex academic enterprise or demonstrable potential to do so; experience with appointment, evaluation, and promotion of personnel, processes, and procedures; prior success leading or supporting faculty recruitment, retention, and development efforts that enhance academic and inclusive excellence
• Sophisticated ability to manage resources and complex budgets in a decentralized environment, adjusting operational decisions based on college and unit variances; capacity to develop, implement, and administer policies and procedures that support institutional mission and goals
• Ability and willingness to play a signature role in fundraising efforts, with demonstrable success in, or potential for, securing external funding
• Ability to make timely, balanced, courageous, data-informed decisions
• Capacity for change management; agility, flexibility, tolerance for ambiguity, and experience managing organizational change

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a unifying and shared vision for College of Health. The dean must recognize and celebrate the value of each of its distinctive components, including every department, center, clinic, and lab, uniting them with a shared vision. The dean will lead and facilitate the strategic planning process for the college in alignment with the University’s strategic plan.
  • Foster a culture of honesty, transparency, and collaboration. Model open dialogue and communication around the decision-making process and work in close partnership with the faculty, deans, and other campus-wide constituents.
  • Actively strengthen a culture of inclusive excellence. The dean is expected to advance an institutional culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through processes for hiring, developing, and retaining faculty and staff who reflect the increasing diversity of Ball State students. Continue the University’s efforts to be an inclusive community and to foster further integration and collaboration in support of diversity and inclusiveness across campus offices and constituencies, including the diversity of ideas and free speech.
  • Receive recommendations from units concerning the appointment of chairpersons or directors and, in turn, make recommendations to the Provost and President.
  • Act as fiscal agent for the college and allocate funds and resources in a manner that supports the mission of the college.
  • Provide leadership and maintain close contacts with external constituencies that promote the college’s activities and programs.
  • Attract external financial support for the college, particularly to support student and faculty needs as well as innovative initiatives at the college and unit levels. Stimulate the procurement of external grants and cultivate opportunities for fund raising.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • The dean must be able to understand and advocate for each unit individually and facilitate opportunities for collaborations among them to the benefit of the college, the community, and the field.
  • The dean must be capable of making timely, principled decisions in the best interest of the college. A high priority should be placed on building productive, collaborative, and constructive relationships in an effort to instill trust and teamwork that leads to positive results and effective decision-making.
  • Establish and strengthen mutually beneficial partnerships with community partners and organizations while enhancing the learning experiences of Ball State students.
  • Leverage opening of the new Health Professions Building,
