Saint Mary's seeks an innovative scholar to teach its upper-division theatre history course. The course is a continuation of the survey of major developments in Theatre begun in Foundations of Theatre I. It pays special attention to the rise of modern theatre, contemporary forms of theatre and various performance theories. Weekly analysis of specific social, historical, and cultural components provides opportunities for students to develop and broaden their understanding of how theatre arises out of, and is embedded within, a given time period. The structure of the course provides opportunities for the instructor to broaden the scope beyond the white/western frame.


The successful candidate is an accomplished educator with a terminal degree in theatre history or theory, OR significant professional credits equivalent to a terminal degree. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate a history of excellence as an undergraduate theatre history instructor. They will have experience with culturally diverse virtual classrooms; the ability to foster a student-centered, interactive and collaborative online learning environment; and will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate Liberal Arts education. Additional expertise in theatre of diverse American cultural tradition/s (e.g., African American/Black theatre, Asian/Pacific Islander theatre, Deaf theatre, etc.) is highly desirable.
