This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. : The Geophysics Department at Sandia National Laboratories is looking for a dedicated and hardworking Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct seismic/geophysical computational modeling supporting a wide variety of national-security projects. The selected candidate could work on the following: border security/surveillance, ground-based nuclear explosion monitoring and treaty verification, fossil energy upstream oil & gas, waste disposal monitoring, climate change, and site geologic characterization. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Run existing modeling codes and develop new models and algorithms. + Experience with uncertainty quantification. + Effectively present information to internal and external sponsors. + Produce high-quality results, which can include, publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, conference presentations, reports, etc., depending on sponsor requirements. + Collaborate on research papers, reports, and presentations. _This position may require some travel to experimental sites as well as to relevant scientific conferences._

Required:
+ PhD in Geophysics + Experienced in the application of scientific programming and scripting in Matlab, Python, Fortran, and C++ + Evidence of strong research accomplishments in relevant technical areas as proven in the form of technical publications, presentations, software tools, and/or knowledge of applications + Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Desired:
+ Experience in computational geophysical or seismic modeling + Proficiency in seismic array processing techniques and seismic ambient noise processing + Experience in tomographic modeling + Experience in a multi-disciplinary research environment + Excellent oral and written communication skills

Department Description:

The Geophysics Department at Sandia National Laboratories performs geophysics research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory. We apply our expertise to address national-level challenges in Sandia mission area programs, including nuclear explosion monitoring, energy exploration and resource characterization in support of national energy security, nuclear nonproliferation, defense, homeland security, and nuclear weapons. The department has a broad range of expertise in field seismology and modeling, subsurface characterization, seismic, electromagnetic, atmospheric acoustic and infrasound modeling, evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems, and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data.
