Job Description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at University of Virginia is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Research Scientist position to work under the supervision of Dr. Nathan Swami within a joint project with the Orthopedics department at the School of Medicine (SOM).

This research work is focused on stem cell enrichment and cytometry in microfluidic devices for osteogenic transplant applications. Specific lab duties include: maintenance of stem cell cultures, development of microfluidic devices, optimization of microfluidic separation methods, cellular phenotypic analysis and molecular techniques to assess stem cell functionality. Other duties outside the lab include: lab protocol maintenance, data analytics, attending research team meetings; co-advising Ph.D. students, helping co-write manuscripts for publication and formulation of ideas for grant applications. Incumbents will also receive support and mentoring in ways to improve research skills, the preparation of grant proposals, and responsible research practices.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Doctoral degree in an engineering or science discipline with the related training in bioengineering is required by the start date. Research experience in microfluidic cytometry (flow cytometry, impedance cytometry, and deformability cytometry) and separation techniques (hydrodynamic, dielectrophoretic, acoustic force fields) is preferred. Knowledge in working with animal models is preferred, but not required. Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and analytic skills are required. The candidate must be able to work in a lab environment and remotely from home, as necessary.
