Position Summary
OpenStax is a non-profit textbook publisher, learning software producer, and platform for learning research based at Rice University. Our mission is to provide every student with free or low-cost access to high-quality learning materials and tools that help them succeed in their education and career. We have created a library of 29 free and openly licensed college textbooks that have served 6.2 million students, resulting in $576 million dollars in savings. We have created software to help college students in three of those subjects read with more engagement and practice more effectively, incorporating our research team’s expertise in cognitive science and machine learning.

The software engineer II is primarily responsible for implementing visual designs by using React JS and CSS-in-JS for the development of textbook reading experience and learning tools in a responsive single page web application. Strong focus on accessibility, mobile functionality, and overall performance for our millions of users create additional technical challenges on this project. S/he must be able to reproduce designs accurately, including complex user interactions in addition to the visual styles. Creative problem solving and collaboration are required. In addition to writing code, this position requires reviewing other developers’ work, participating in the estimation and specification of new work, and mentoring more junior developers. The software engineer II demonstrates areas of expertise and provides guidance to other developers in these areas. Additionally, the software engineer II provides input on decisions related to overall code architecture.

- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
- May substitute successful completion of technical boot camp program for education requirement

Experience Preferred
- Strong experience with React JS
- Experience with CSS-in-JS tools such as styled-components
- Experience with state management tools such as flux or redux
- Strong understanding of HTML5, CSS, and Javascript fundamentals
- Comfort with server side or CI/CD development a plus

Skills Required
- Current knowledge of latest software and design standards
- Ability to define and solve logical problems for technical applications
- Knowledge of and ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods
- Ability to recognize and recommend needed changes in user and/or operations procedures
- Basic knowledge of software engineering principles.
- Strong knowledge of at least one programming language
